Thinking Ahead To Summer...And Warmer Days

With Scarsdale and Edgemont having received yet another snow storm, most people are counting the days till spring and summer arrives. And what is one of the best features to have in the summer?

Why, a pool, of course.

Like Clark Griswold in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, who fantasizes about buying an in-ground pool with his holiday bonus, you can see it already: The crystal clear water, the poolside deck, the floating raft just waiting for you to climb on and sunbathe.

You're not alone.

Some real estate professionals caution that a swimming pool can be a deterrent to buyers when the home goes back on the market. Having an in-ground pool in the backyard has the potential to dissuade an interested buyer who might not have any desire to deal with the maintenance it demands, or the danger it adds to families with children.

Still, people apparently can't stay away from creating personal water wonderlands, according to statistics compiled by the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals.

And it isn't just the pool itself, many times the backyard investment continues with the installation of large decks and outdoor living areas, which are hugely popular and do add lots of value.

Above-ground pools traditionally don't add any value to a home when resale time comes, according to research from the National Association of Realtors. In-ground pools are a different story. They do tend to add some value - about 7.7%, according to National Association of Realtors statistics. Larger homes with pools on oversized properties tend to be more desirable than properties with pools that take up most of the land- people still want property to enjoy.

The benefits of having a swimming pool are numerous, from relaxing after a hard days work to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Swimming pools have a magical way of allowing people to gather together and enjoy the summertime.

You can relax by it, read by it, and play games in it- basically just act like a kid again. A swimming pool also adds to the backyard oasis feeling of comfort and relaxation.

So on this day where Westchester has been hit by almost 2 feet of snow, let's look ahead to summer and think of the nice, warm days where we can jump in the water and float the day away working on our tans.
