Charlie Rangel Takes A Leave Of Absence

By

Charlie Rangel announced today that he is asking Pelosi for a leave of absence from the Ways and Means Committee until the Ethics investigation is over.  He refused to take questions from the press.  He indicated that he was going to get back to work passing the Presidents bills.

  • Is it finally time for the Democrats to do the right thing?  Charlie Rangel has been embroiled in ethics issues for over a year.  He is the Chairman of the House Ways and Means committee.  This is one of the most powerful committees charged with, among other things, writing tax law.

Tax evasion, or the appearance thereof, is exactly what is bringing Charlie Rangel down. He is also suspected of taking a trip to St. Martin on a Corporate dime.

  • Hard to believe on his Congressional salary of $174,000 a year that he has managed to accumulate 7 properties in New York, Washington DC, New Jersey, Florida and the Dominican Republic. An amended disclosure form for 2008 puts his net worth at 2.5 million. Amended Disclosure

The New York Post published an article about the 40 years of tax evasion, misdeeds and contempt of Charlie Rangel.  Full Article

When Obama took office we were promised the most ethical legislative body in history.  The Rangel investigation has been going on long before this administration took power.  The administration has does nothing to fulfill their promise.  As of yesterday Speaker Pelosi was still refusing to censure Rangel or demand that he resign his Chairmanship of the Committee.

  • Is Rangel an exception or the rule?  One can only ponder how many other legislators have feathered their nest while on the job serving the American people.

Bonnie and Jayne,  Charlie Rangle lived in my neighborhood for many years and was quite a character.  And I think that he might want to think about retiring right about now - and not just from the Ways and Means Committee.

I think Rangel is toast! I won't shed a tear, as a Republican would never have lasted this long. So long Charlie!

You are chairman or you are not.  Only would a Dem think to take a "leave of absence," and not resign.  They don't hardly ever, ever resign...

Carol,  the double standard sure seems to exist.  Tom Daschal was removed for ethical issues far more mundance than this.  The Dems caused a huge uproar and had him ousted.

They have consistently circled the wagons around Rangel.

Lawrence.  When it comes to skin crawling I agree with you.  Others make my blood boil - like Reid and Pelosi.

Hello Patricia - enjoyed your segment at Rain Camp.

It's not hard to see that he is a character.  There were also some deals reported where he got government re-hab money for a brownstone he inherited from a family member.

I really think this is the tip of the iceberg.  He has been profiteering for years. Retire already.

Georgia,  You're right.  We can't even expect them to READ the law before they pass it.  There seems to be this huge immunity zone around Washington DC lawmakers.

Kevin thank you for the re-blog.  I'm sure he is just one of many who needs a pink slip in Washington.

Wallace, From what I heard the House rules do not recognize leave of absence.  He is officially gone as Chairman.  The leave of absence was just smoke and mirrors for resignation.

Regardless of the corruption which abounds, I cannot see any way he can be cleared.

JP, Does he has a private jet as well?  What's his excuse?

Some time ago I heard about a junior Congressmen who put a cot in his office to save on living expenses while in Washington.  I'm not suggesting that the House become a Motel, but some respect for tax payer money should be adopted.

Joe,  I have not heard one Dem come out publicly and demand that Rangel resign.  Nancy Pelosi promised to drain the swamp. You'd think she'd be using this as an example of fulfilling that promise.  Oops, wrong party.

Jay, According to the Parliamentarian of the House - you are or you are not.  No leave of absence is permitted.

Aren't we all just sick and tired of how disingenuous this administration is?
