Only in Kensington will you find an event this insane, inspired, and all-out fun. The Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby is back for its fourth ride this year.
Every spring, sculpture vehicles are designed by artists from Fishtown, Kensington, and all over. They compete for awards like Best Engineering or Best Costumes. There's a Best Local Business/Organization Representation. Participants then follow the parade route through the Fishtown and Kensington neighborhoods, which is a definite street-stopper for those that they pass by. For those interested in signing up this year, there will be a Meet n Greet on Saturday, March 13 at Philadelphia Brewing Company from 2-4pm. They'lll discuss the building process and introduce potential teammates.
We've gone each time and we're always surprised at how much work goes into this event. People really put their best efforts out. The Trenton Avenue Arts Festival partners the derby, so that there are plenty of crafts to peruse and food vendors serving up local specialties.
This year's derby is scheduled for May 22nd, so you have plenty of time to get started on your wheels. Deadline for registration is May 7th.
