Farmers Markets in and around Athens, GA:
It's that time again! Spring is slowly making her grand entrance which will mean that farmers will have their delicious produce available for the local farmers markets!! Personally, I am so excited because this means that I can make my money support locally owned businesses while ensuring that my family is eating as healthfully as possible. Typically, buyers save money at local farmers markets over grocery store chains.
Consumers also get the added benefit that artificial colors, preservatives, and waxes are NOT in their food. Many of the farmers markets around Athens are also sworn to natural, sustainable farming which means that the food you buy from them is as natural as it gets, and the processes they use to grow your food make minimal impact on the environment. In addition, consumers don't have to worry about how long their food has been on a truck being shipped to them.... all the while losing valuable nutrients. At these local farmers markets, farmers typically pick the fresh produce anywhere from 1 to a few days before the market- so these fruits, veggies, and herbs are as fresh as it gets.
There are also farmers that raise poultry and livestock for purchasing. At some of these markets you can also expect to see live music and vendors selling locally made arts and crafts. I truly believe their is no better way to support your local community. These would all be great opportunities to get out and enjoy the good weather when they are all open! They are also a way for a community to come together and support each other's businesses as well as health and happiness.
