The Barron Park neighborhood in Palo Alto, bounded by Matedero Ave, El  Camino Real and Arastedero Road, is known for having a unique character. It was the last to be annexed to Palo Alto in 1975 despite the heated debate that it should remain independent. It remains its rural feel with the absence of sidewalks and curbs. Many people are attracted to Barron Park for its strong sense of community. Newcomers to the neighborhood feel welcomed right away as they begin to participate in the communities activities. The Barron Park neighborhood association has several gatherings throughout the year.

Another feature unique to Barron Park is the neighborhood donkeys, Pericles (or Perry, for short) and Miner 49er. The Barron Park donkeys have been loved and cared for by generations of Palo Alto children and adults since 1936. Interesting fact:  Perry was the model for the donkey in the movie Shrek. Barron Park is one of the top choice neighborhoods for families because the excellent schools. Gunn High school, in the Barron Park neighborhood, is ranked in the top 100 High School in the US according US News. The elementary and middle schools are both within short walking distance.
