WESTHAMPTON BEACH PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978
Opened as a movie theatre in 1934 in a ceremony presided over by New York Governor Alfred Smith. A consortium of community groups purchased the tired United Artists Theatre in 1996, and on July 4, 1998, the newly-named and beautifully restored Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center re-opened as a cultural/entertainment center and community playhouse. Performances in the 425-seat Center have included $1-per-ticket showings of the classic films Casablanca and Citizen Kane, concerts by notables such as Marvin Hamlisch and Itzhak Perlman, and performances by Ben Vereen, Joe Cocker, The Spinners, Joan Rivers, Joan Baez, and Billy Joel.
There have been over 700 Main Stage performances since 1998 with over 350,000 patrons attending. Operating year-round, the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center has made a significant impact on the village revitalization and local economy.
