Dressing for Success

By

Okay, so the real estate market is in a correction and buyers, as well as sellers are getting harder to find, so what  is a real estate professional to do? Well, if you've noticed like I have recently most agents have opted for a casual dress. Call me old-fashioned but I still believe that a significant part of a clients decision in choosing a real estate professional is strongly based on nonverbal components such as handshake, eye contact, posture, body language and most importantly grooming and clothing. I think with the market as tough as it is, first impressions are VERY important. Many people make assumptions about your credibility and performance as a professional within 30 seconds of meeting you, regardless of your experience and knowledge. I can make this assumption from personal experiences: When my son was younger and needed an operation for his appendix, the surgeon came out to introduce himself, although he was an excellent surgeon my first impression of this doctor who looked like a mad scientist had my wife and my nerves frayed, were we trusting our son in the hands of this crazy looking man? Needless to say the operation went without any complications and he turned out to be an excellent doctor/surgeon. My point is had I had the choice to walk out and choose a different doctor I most definitely would have. Once again FIRST IMPRESSIONS are crucial. Dressing for success means so much more than just your clothes, you don't have to be a fashion nut, or have the best, but a clean appearance shows that you are organized. Again I may sound old-fashioned but appearance does matter! whether you are out with clients, at the corner deli getting a cup of coffee or  in the office, how you dress says a lot about your personality. Perception is everything, if you look successful you are going to be successful!.  So we can't control the market, but we can control how people see us. Remember people are conducting one of the biggest decisions in their life!.  Would you trust this decision with a person dressed like they are working in the yard or going out in jeans and a T-shirt? I wouldn't. so remember Dress for success!!
