Mildew is a thin, black, or sometimes white, growth produced by mold. Molds are always present in the air but those that cause mildew need moisture and certain temperatures to grow. They commonly develop in humid, especially in closed spaces.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy Instructions, Things You'll Need: * Cleaning supplies, lemon juice, salt, bleach,

Step 1 As we all know, mildew likes heat and moisture. Bathroom is usually the place where heat and moisture are combined to create an ideal conditions for mildew grows.

Step 2 There are a few ways to prevent mildew from developing. Make sure your bathroom is well designed and the exhaust fan is sized for your bathroom and working properly. Used it every time someone takes a shower. If you don't have an exhaust fan, get it installed and make sure it is vented to the outside. For people who tend to forget to turn it on, I recommend to install a timer switch connected to your light switch.

Step 3 Remove spilled water immediately and if you have a shower curtain, move it to the side to allow for air circulation in the tub or shower are. If you have a glass door, keep it open for 10-15 min. after you showered.

Step 4 If you already have mildew, there are several ways to remove it, but I will mention only two, probably the easiest ones: #1 Lemon juice and salt #2 Chlorine bleach For detailed mildew protection and cleaning suggestions, please visit this great site I've found for you: http://extension.missouri.edu/pub.aspx?P=GH5928

Thanks for the home remedy tips for clean up. Another thing you want to ovoid is incorrect spelling in your title.

Thank you Jay, I was never good with spelling, so I could not find the misspelling you are talking about.

Could you point it out to me?

Thank you Pat.

Having and using properly sized exhaust fan helps a lot. I also suggest leaving/keeping the tub or shower door open after each use to provide better air circulation and let everything dry inside.

This is even more important for steam showers.

Alex, this is great advice.  It's easier to prevent the stuff than to try to get rid of it - unless you like lemon juice and Chlorox!
