Georgia had 152,200 construction workers last month, down 3 percent from 156,900 in December 2009 and down 16.7 percent from 182,700 January 2009. It ranked 14th worst among the states for construction job losses.
These losses reflect the direct decline in homebuilding, but less evident is the loss of these folks as homeowners or renters. This represents 30,500 potential households losing their income in the last year. Many construction workers move to where the work is, like the gulf coast.
