Malcolm GladwellMalcolm Gladwell at the Arlington

Another great aspect of Santa Barbara life is that some of the most influential people stop by and give lectures. It's the same with musicians, some of the best musicians include Santa Barbara in their tours...can you blame them?  Everyone wants to experience a little paradise.   Last night Malcolm Gladwell, best selling author was speaking at the Arlington theater so some friends and I decided to see what he had to say.  Malcolm has a gift for explaining new ideas in the social sciences in an entertaining way.  He has multiple New York Times best sellers and a new book out titled Outliers which is about fostering the factors that lead to success.  In last nights lecture he describes the phenomenon of overconfidence that successful people almost inevitably drift towards as their success increases and the misjudgment that it leads to. He also said that when a person acquires more information on a subject it does not always lead to a more accurate understanding of the subject but almost always leads the person to believe that they do have a better understanding.  He gave several examples including the latest Wall St disaster, Civil War General, Hooker and others.  In conclusion, he mentioned that successful people need to operate at an optimal level of delusion, not too deluded to believe everything they are doing is perfect, leading to overconfidence but not too realistic to believe that that we really don't know anything for certain.  I have a B.S. degree in social sciences from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo so, for me, this lecture was interesting and fun.  I guess it is a good question to ask ourselves from time to time.  Hmm, am I optimally delusional?

I love, it, I just finished Outliers and hadn't read his work before and I really enjoy it.It reminds me of Seth Godin.
