Casu Marzu. Who wants some?

I had to secure another bank property on Saturday. It wasn't really a big deal, as the people had left quite a while ago, and had left the house in a relatively clean state. It was a drama-free operation. From what I could gather though, the power had been disconnected for quite some time, which must have been awfully tough on the people, as the heat source is electric baseboard. Everything looked pretty good, there were no mounds of garbage all over the place and the walls, floors and trim looked to be intact. There were some things left behind, but it would be a minor job for the clean-up crew. I could have taken some pictures, changed the locks and just left. Oh no, I couldn't leave it at that though, could I?

Down in the basement there was a big freezer, the type that psycopaths use to store the bodies they dismember in. Of course I would have to open it, temporarily forgetting that there hadn't been any hydro in the house for months. I don't know if it's a subconcious thing and I really do want to discover a severed head or some such thing, but if there's a freezer, I have to open it. The stench was overwhelming and almost made me vomit in a matter of seconds. Although it was fairly dark in the bottom of the freezer, I did notice a lot of wriggling around down there. Driving home after that little episode I couldn't help but remember an episode of Chef Gordon Ramsey's show where he featured casu marzu, the Italian maggot cheese. So, after this long winded introduction, here's a little video of one of the world's least known delicacies. Bon apetit. Stay tuned for next week when I'll think of a way to introduce a video about Korean baby mice wine.

Malcolm,

I understand completely when they decide to drink a lot of wine.

Malcolm,

I once sold a house that had a freezer in it.  I had a note on the switch at the top of stairs (do no cut off this switch).  What happened....someone cut off the switch. There went the power to the deep freezer.   I can sympathize with you....the stench was overwhelming..

Have a great day
