Spring Maintenance Tips for the inside and outside of your Home

So you have just hibernated through one of the worst winters that we have ever seen. I have lived in Central Virginia for 20 years and I have never seen anything quite like this past winter. It felt like I was in the abominable snowman movie. The snow has melted and the weather is starting to get nice. I know it's tempting to get out of the house and enjoy the weather because you have been couped up for so long! But here are some tips that could save you time so you can enjoy the summer and not get stuck at the house doing chores. So I have put together some Spring Maintenance Tips to help you play this summer.

Here are some Spring Maintenance Tips that could help you save some time and money. (Saving money is nice!)

Spring Maintenance Tips for inside

1: please..please check out your AC system. Don't wait until the first hot day to turn your AC system on and find out that its not working! If you do it will be a nice long wait until the repair man is there! I don't think you want that! So check to make sure its working so you can enjoy your hot summer days nice and cool.

2: Dont forget to change out the filters in your HVAC system once a month. You will have much cleaner air to breath and in turn feel much better.

3: Check and Clean the Dryer vent. After loads and loads of laundry going through the dryer the exhaust vent may start to get clogged. We do not want to throw a load into the dryer and go to the beach for the day only to come home and see that the house has burned down.  This will not make for a very good day or year for that matter!

4: If you have a Coil-back Refrigerator which in most cases most people do, pull it out from the wall and vacuum the coils. Your fridge will thank you and in-turn will reduce your electric bill.

5: Clean everything from top to bottom with non-toxic soaps, this will also help in the air quality department.

Spring Maintenance Tips for your outdoors

Now its time to get outside and do some dirty work

1 Inspect the roof and look for any damaged or lose shingles. If the damaged part of the shingle is less that 20% of the roof have the damaged part replaced. If more than 20% replace the whole roof! ouch.. Try not to let it get this far!

2 Remove all the debris from the gutters and downspouts, and patch any holes that may have occurred. Keeping the gutters and down spouts clean will help in keeping water away from your home. Make sure the water is also getting directed away from the house at least 5 feet. Any less than that and the water has a better opportunity to seep in the basement and crawl space and start to create mold. Mold is not nice and could cost you thousands to get rid of it.

3. Make sure all the shrubs and bushes are away from the home.

4. Walk around your home, and make sure that all of the seals around the doors and windows are sealed. If they are flaking and look delapatated it needs to be replaced. If they need to be recaulked make sure you remove the old caulking and use a latex caulks for the job.

These are just some Spring Maintenance tips that you can do to your home so you can fully enjoy the summer. Watch out sun and sand here I come!!
