How diverse is your company? Does it make any difference?

For a small company owner, I feel pretty lucky to have the quality and diversity of folks who have signed on with us. The Washington DC Metro area is a true melting pot and, we literally have people from all over the globe. In the past year alone, we have completed transactions with buyers and sellers from 18 different countries. Fortunately, most of them spoke enough English to make themselves clear about their preferences and the types of services they wish to have provided.

Of particular note, more than 30% of the first-time buyers in our area were Spanish-speaking. This speaks volumes about how well the Spanish population is making strides educationally, socially and economically. They are assuming an increasing number of professional and management positions in our community. To keep pace with these changes, I have begun hiring agents from Spanish-speaking countries. I am also trying to brush up on and improve my use of Spanish. As a company, we are enjoying the new relationships, exchanging ideas on cultural differences and, best of all, bringing in food and desserts to compare and contrast with each other!

Is your area undergoing a similar integration of folks from different parts of the United States or other countries? Is your office composition changing ethnically? Are you all changing any ways of doing business or learning new information to be able to better assist people from different cultures? If yes, please explain.

This post gives me a chuckle.

The Maryland Association of Realtors is always encouraging diversity in brokerages.  I got a call from them a couple of years ago asking if they could make a Fair Housing presentation at our next meeting.  "Sure, come on", I said.

It was funny.  The lady walked in and saw that about 1/2 of our agents were minorities, not including female, and she smiled all over.

We had a very nice meeting.

I recently added several Spanish speaking agents to my roster of referral agents.

We aim to please and it's good business.

Hi Lenn - It's fun, but I gotta cut back on the food! My horizon's not the only thing that's expanding......

I have to admit I chuckled as well - I live in MIAMI and if you are not diverse, you will not survive.  Knowing 2 languages is pretty standard and there are agents that know 4 and 5!  I am very glad to hear about the diversity in other parts of the country though.
