Back in 1997, Alan Solomon, travel writer with the Chicago Tribune, declared Bayfield Wisconsin (on Lake Superior) to be the "Best Little Town in the Midwest".  And after a recent visit to Bayfield in the Summer of 2007, Solomon has written that Bayfield "is still as special today as it was in 1997".

Solomon notes a number of reasons for his high praise of Bayfield.  His 1997 article praised the fact that there are no traffic lights, no billboards or huge neon signs, no "chain" discount stores in the entire county.  Solomon refers to Bayfield and the Apostle Islands, including Madeline Island, as "paradise".

Apostle Islands fans may view a clip of Solomon's recent travel article, "Best Little Town, Ten Years Later" on the Chicago Tribune website by visiting the Chicago Tribune online Travel Section.  The complete article appeared in the July 15th Chicago Tribune Newspaper Travel Section print edition.

Bayfield and the Apostle Islands region has been featured in a number of recent publications, including "1000 Places to See in the USA and Canada Before You Die" (by Patricia Schultz) and in "101 Best Outdoor Towns" (by Sarah Tuff and Greg Melville).
