Can Public Speaking Kill You?

I was really struck by the time I was able to spend with Dave Jenks last week doing the Fearless Living Tour together.

One of Dave's strengths as a speaker is his ability to get the audience to imagine themselves in a situation, and then have them realize how ridiculous the thoughts associated with that situation can be.

One case where this was most evident was when Dave was describing where fear comes from. As Dave makes clear in the short video below, its not just our thoughts. There is "hard-wiring" in our brain associated with our fears.

But sometimes our thoughts really are a little ridiculous.

Ask some people if they are afraid of public speaking. Some people will literally say, "I could never speak in front of a group, I would die." You might know someone who would say this, or you might even say it yourself.

Think about that. Some people associate dying with public speaking!

It's no wonder they are afraid to do it. Perhaps if they associated public speaking with accomplishment, they would think differently.

Have you ever said you were so afraid to do something that it might kill you?

(PS - I was once scared out of my mind to speak in front of large groups too. Now its the primary way I make my living. I overcame that fear, and you can too.)

Here is the video of Dave talking about where our fears come from:

Does this help you look at fears a little differently? If so, plan on joining Dave and I on the Fearless Living Tour this year.
