Apple iPad and MLXchange - not a match made in heaven?

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Masterpiece

Okay friends, I just pre-ordered the new iPad and I feel like a kid at Christmas!  Apple's iPad

I can think of a zillion ways in which I will be able to use it for my business - on tour with customers, making appointments, showing photos of the beach while we're touring houses .... Limitless possibilities.

But my only daunting dilemna is that our Regional MLS uses MLXchange - which is not Safari compatible. Anyone have any ideas or faced with the same problem?

At this point in the game I think an MLS owes it to its subscribers to offer a product that is compatible for all types of internet users and not be IE proprietary.

I've got one month to brainstorm, campaign, and figure out how to make my MLS work on my shiny new iPad when it gets here. Otherwise, I'm going to be left with technologically handicapped and resent my MLS for not supporting my super-savvy needs. ;)

Anyone else out there have the iPad on pre-order? Have ideas on cool ways to use it for your business? Any ideas to share?

You could have your office setup a citrix server and then port the IE application to it. Using the citrix client on an iPad would allow you to run the ported IE application off the citrix server. It's a bit fiddly but I have seen it done.

I think what M. James is saying with the Citrix solution is that you can run a "remote desktop" application - there are many from Citrix, VMWare, remember PCAnywhere?, etc... that will provide a "window" to your desktop computer on your iPad so that what you see on your iPad is an exact replica of what's on your desktop (yes, even Windows).  It's slow(ish) but can work in a pinch.  MLXchange really does need to allow more flexibility - especially with the new toys (err.. tools) out there available to Realtors.

Thanks for the comments.

I've found that the FREE "Team Viewer" app for the iPad is a good solution for remote desktop. I've tried it, used it, but still find that I'm not a fan of the sluggish reaction time.

If MLS would just develop an app similar to the Zillow app for the iPhone my life would be complete.

We also have MLXchange and I am able to use KURIO on my iphone and ipad. It is a scaled down version of MLS but works great for my needs.

I have been asking MLXChange for over 1 year to implement a safari friendly MLS System.  They keep assuring me that it is coming - but when I ask?  You can use the "log me in" app to gain access to your home computer and access the MLXChange from their.  It works just like you are at your desk computer.

Hi Sarah, I'm Beta testing a Citrix app that allows you to connect to a 3rd party server for access to Internet Explorer 8.  This way, I do not have to keep my PC at home/office online using GoToMyPC or another app.  This gives full access to MFR.

What are you using for access?  Thanks, Dan

Sarah,

We just started offering a super slick and easy to use service for only $20 per month that allows users to use MLXchange on their iPad.  You can see more about it at realsocialpros.com

It allows you to do forms and use the maps and everything.  Everyone has been really excited about it.

Best,

James

This is BS....we need to boycott mlxchange.....it is worthless the way it is, then you add the fact that you're stuck with the garbage IE. Wow...what an industry we are in the we have archaic systems that can't get out of their own way.

Pablo, You are right. There are a bunch of remote desktop apps out there. What we have done at http://RealMobilePros.com is put together a cloud based desktop solution. This means that you don't have to try to maintain another system. We keep it working. We use a sweet WYSE app to run MLXchange on iPad, mac, android, or any other mobile platform. What I can't figure out is that if so many agents have so many complaints with MLXchange, why don't the boards change. What is it that MLXchange does better than anyone else that makes their product so popular?

I'm working toward getting a shiny new ipad, but I too have felt Sarah's pain.  I see that James says there is something that can now be used, but $20 a month?  Really?  You mean we don't pay enough for MLS already?  Seriously?  Get with the 21st century MLXchange and make it happen without more fees pleeze!

Seriously this is stupid. It can't be that difficult to have ml run on safari. I agree. Get with the times

Ken, I have spoken with folks at CoreLogic. It sounds like they don't have any plans to make changes in the near future. We have quite a few agents who signed up with service at RealMobilePros.com during this month. They are from Florida, Alberta, Las Vegas, New Orleans, and all over the states. When I spoke with the folks at our MLS in Arkansas, they were pretty happy with the folks at MLXchange, which convinced me they were NOT going to change for a long time. I agree. I love my iPad and am thinking about getting a new Mac but with no access to our local MLS I'm having a hard time. I do not understand with all that we pay, they cannot come up with a program for safari.
