While producing a series of podcasts recently for our client, John V. Pinto, I wondered aloud, "wouldn't it be great if we had a professional studio to record in." (Don't get me wrong, our setup works very well, but it's no Abbey Road.)
John replied, "Perfection is overrated, I would rather get the word out now, than spend days to perfect a handful of recordings."
My goal as a marketer is to design and promote the best possible image of my clients. This statement goes against my existing philosophy...I am by no means a perfectionist but I often find myself focusing on small details of a project to make them "more perfect"
I thought for a minute and I realized that John was right. We are not producing a Grammy Award winning album or a Top 40 single, we are creating an educational podcast. A podcast should have a clear purpose, relevant information, lots of content, and good sound quality. It doesn't have to be perfect! The pursuit of perfection can hinder the ultimate goal of "getting the word out" and engaging clients and potential clients on the web. It is also much harder to get started if you are already looking ahead (and dreading) the editing process.
If you are thinking about podcasting or like the idea of podcasting the best thing to do is jump right in and start recording. Don't worry about perfecting your performance, even the best musicians occasionally miss a beat.
