Color / B&W Composites with Capture NX2

color / black and white composite

Color / Black & White composites are a common tricktechnique used in many portrait studios.  I've always thought that it makes for a very striking image.

I'm sure there are many software tools that make this possible, but my favorite is Nikon's Capture NX2.  I can literally finish this composite conversion in less than 30 seconds.

Once I had the image open in NX2, I first selected "Black & White Conversion" from the "Filter" menu.  Next, I clicked on the "Minus Selection Control Point", clicked on one of the eyes and I was done!

Well, almost done.  I then went back to Adobe Lightroom to adjust the contrast, increase the blue saturation very slightly, and do some selective sharpening around the eyes.

This beautiful little girl is my baby granddaughter, Carlli, at almost 8 months.

"I listen for a living." It's all about you.

What a great picture Mike.  She is so relaxed and comfortable looking in the camera at her grandfather.  Did you change the colors of her eyes, they are so radiantly blue.   I have been a Nikon guy myself for years.  I love the system.  Thanks for sharing the technique.

Larry, thank you very much.  No, her eyes are naturally blue, but probably not quite THAT blue - I bumped up the saturation just a little bit.

I agree with you about Nikon.  I switched from Canon about a year and a half ago and have come to really appreciate the quote about "Nikons are designed by photographers".

Have a great day!

Mike,

I love B/W selective color! My first experiences with it were in a photography classroom. We would create B/W images in the darkroom and then color in specific parts of the photograph with oils. The possibilities are endless with such a cool format.

That is a beautiful baby girl by the way. You must be a very proud Grandfather!

Hi Ian and thank you.  Yes, I'm very proud of her!

The way you used to do it took a lot longer and required much more artistic ability than my way with the computer!

Hi Mike.....such a beautiful child, and this technique enhances her innocence very nicely.  I'll have a look around in my Canon software and CS3....I should be able to find something similar there, don't you think?  You're a lucky Grandad!

You are right Mike, having them close is a blessing.  Sometimes I don't get to see them for a few weeks.  When I finally do they look so different!

Cute Kid Mike! I like the effect. My youngest Granddaughter told me to "Stop taking so many pictures Grandpa!"

Mike, this is a gallery quality shot. Your granddaughter is so beautiful. I also have a little blue-eyed grandson who is a year and three months and we enjoy him so very much!

I switched from Canon (my film camera) to Nikon when I went digital and I have never looked back. Love that Nikon! I didn't know the part about being designed by photographers, but I can tell you that it takes spectacular photos. I'll have to look into the NX2 software. Thanks for sharing how and what you did to make this family heirloom.

I never knew how that was done.  It sounds pretty easy. I wonder what other software does that.

Hi Mike,

Love the photo trick-nique, but it pales as to the subject matter!! She is adorable. We had our first grandbaby one week ago today. Life changes... :)
