At a recent Men's Breakfast at the Mountain View Restaurant in Kings Mountain on 23 Jan 2010, guest speaker Mayor Rick Murphrey shared the following information:

-An environmental impact study is under way to determine the feasibility of adding a ‘feeder' lake to supplement the existing Moss Lake water supply.

-Kings Mountain had the lowest crime rate in 18 years for the year 2009.

-Acknowledging a potential budget shortfall due to the drastic changes in the economy, Kings Mountain was able to trim expenses to prevent raising taxes.

-The fire station near city hall is now set up to serve as an emergency shelter should the need arise.

-Duke Power plans to build a corporate training and support center in the Cleveland County Industrial Park on Beason Creek Road, near the U.S. 74 Moss Lake exit.  Potential new jobs could range from 75 to 125, but the number could change as plans are finalized.  He also added that the area near the BP station is a ‘hot spot' for commercial real estate.

-The former Plonk building was sold and the new owners are planning to use the site as a restaurant.

-A major trucking operation is re-locating to Kings Mountain and will provide over 400 jobs. Bell Lines Inc. LLC owner, Charles T. Lohr has bought the former Carolina Western 4 acre trucking center on Charles Street near Hwy 161.

-The city will promote recycling to help protect the environment by providing roll-out containers to recycle aluminum, glass, etc.  To encourage participation no separation of the items is necessary, simply put the items in the container and the separation will be done at another location.

-During a time when many municipalities are experiencing difficult times, Mayor Murphrey explained yet other reasons to select our area as a place to live.  He also noted that MONEY magazine rated Kings Mountain, NC as one of the top 100 cities to live in.

In addition to the geographical location with regards to easy access to I-85 and Hwy 74 making commutes to Charlotte, NC, Spartanburg, SC, and Atlanta, GA convenient; Kings Mountain also has other desirable attributes.  For example, a plentiful source of water from Moss Lake and the two city lakes and the Kings Mountain Gateway Trail to just name a few.

Nice to see the promotion of such a great little town!  I lived there until I was 15 and would love to return someday.
