Federal and Provincial Governments Invest $147 Million in Halton Region Infrastructure

One of the main concerns the citizens of Oakville, Burlington, Milton and rural Halton have is aging infrastructure.

As a result, the Municipal Government of Halton was able to secure a total investment of $147 million from the Federal and Provincial Governments to address these infrastructure needs.

$103 million will be spent on the expanding and upgrading the Skyway Wastewater Treatment Plant in Burlington. Approximately 1,700 jobs will be created in the process.

$33.4 million will be allocated for upgrading the Southwest Wastewater Treatment Plant in Oakville and the remaining $10.6 million will be used to widen Tremain Road between Main Street and Derry Road in Milton. This will help to decongest the traffic in Halton and provide for greater growth of the economy.

Infrastructure within Halton will get a further boost with an investment of $394.7 million from 2010 Regional budget allocations.
Fom these funds, $109.3 million will be spent on transportation, $252.8 million on water and wastewater and $1.5 million on waste management.

Halton region continues to grow and flourish and with the allocation of these funds, our infrastructure will be able to support and encourage a healthier city, both economically and environmentally. This equates to a better experience for not only those living within Halton, but also for those who come to visit.

I'm happy to see so many communities such as yours benefiting from these infrastructure dollars however, they are dollars that were taken away when the Provinces and Feds downloaded so many responsibilities to the lower tier governments.  As a result, our infrastructure is in the worst shape ever and it's about time they directed dollars back to their maintenance and repair.  It's not a gift in any sense; it's the taxpayers dollars at work in a very pure sense.

Marg,

I remember when they started to take away money from so many needed departments, like the Ministry of the Environment, and downloaded the responsibilities onto the municipal governments. So much was negatively affected by those strategies and you're right, it's time some of the money came back where it's most needed.

Jo,

These are the types of programs that make sense. It's just too bad the money didn't get out sooner.
