Coconuts Galore, Look at those babies!

Look at those Coconuts! We have never seen so many coconuts on a tree before! This is our Coconut Tree that we planted 3 years ago in Wellington Florida in our front yard. Coconut Tree Wellington Fl

So I realized that I don't even know when to pick the coconuts. When are they ready?

I have been eating Young Asian Coconuts for a couple of years now. They are soft and the milk is very sweet and contains mega nutrients. I open it up, put all the milk in a blender, scoop out the soft meat and then I blend it all together. This is quite a refreshing drink and gives me a huge boost of energy.

Coconut oil is rich in Lauric Acid which is known for its anti viral, anti- fungal and antibacterial properties. It also helps in losing weight which is hard for many people to believe since coconuts are high in fat. But it is a good and healthy fat that actually helps in raising the metabolism.  The fat in Coconut does not raise cholesterol.  It is now being recognized by the medical community for its powerful immune disease fighting properties. Lauric Acid is found in mother's milk. It is recommended that an adult have 24 ounces of Lauric Acid for positive health benefits. That amount can be found in 10 ounces of raw coconut daily or 3.5 Tablespoons of raw cold pressed Coconut oil.

Amazing what you can find out about something in your own yard! Katerina

Myra-I am glad you love them. I was surprised to find out how healthy they are for us a few years ago. Before that I would not eat them because of the bad press the fats were getting. Now we know not all fats are created equal! Katerina

Wow! I had no idea that coconuts are so good for you! Guess what I am getting the next time I am in the store!!!

So where do you get the tree, if you want to plant one? Can it be grown from seeds or do you have to go to a tropical nursery to get the tree???

Bill and Barbara- You will not believe this but we bought it at Home Depot in the garden center. It was a young tree and has grown like magic this past 3 years and withstood the hurricanes of '05. Nestor has a green thumb, not me, what I touch, dies the kiss of death if it is a plant! They take too long to grow from seeds. We bought it at home depot because of their one year guarantee on plants. We figured if it was going to die it would do so in the first year after planting. We used to have some palms there but we think it is waste if you can grow food instead! Thanks for reading my post.

So tell me, what do you do with all those coconuts?  No one family could possibly eat that many.  Great localism post!

Margaret- Thanks! This is the first year we have so many coconuts. I will give them away to people that are from the Bahamas and Haiti that live here. They know that the coconuts help lower high blood pressure and help with heart problems. They will be by to ask if they can have some! And I will gladly give them as we can not eat all of them before they go bad. Katerina

Nestor & Katerina, what did you do with all those coconuts. And, have you had such abundance in subsequent years?
