My gratitude continues… I’m grateful for “Resistance”

I woke up this morning at 4:45 with a smile on my face… Why you might be wondering? Because my coach, Joe Stumpf has said many, many times “the best things in life happen outside your comfort zone”… and I want you to know that I’m very comfortable in my bed at 4:45 in the morning!

If you know me… then you might already know that when I’m in my routine, and I go to the gym… I’m a better me. I read more, I eat better, feel better and even look better.

Over the past few weeks I have read “Linchpin” by Seth Godin, and I’m almost finished with “The War of Art” by Steven Pressfield. In both of these books it mentions “resistance”. An example of resistance is that voice inside your head that says don’t do it, just hit the snooze, you will fail, or it even helps you find things to do when you know you should be doing something else. You know what I mean… don’t you? :-)

Today I’m grateful for that resistance that I have all around me… I have been listening to and using that resistance as a compass – to help find and acknowledge all the opportunities that are around me, and each day I hope to find some new resistance in my path. I love the thought that I’m acknowledging those thoughts and actions that are holding me back, and that I’m working to overcome them.

With that said… I too hope that you find resistance in your day, and that you find a way to break through that challenge and find yourself closer to whatever it is that you are looking for!

Good for you for not hitting the snooze. We all feel better, look better and perform better when working out. It's something that must be scheduled.

Jeff:

What a thoughtful post and honest expression of who you are....where you are....and your choice to value challenges as opportunities.  Thanks for putting this out there!  I think a lot of people will appreciate your perspective.

Nicely put Jeffrey!

It's nice to read another 'By Referral Only' member's perspective.  It seems that very-few things in life - that are good - come without struggle.

I am reminded of when I was a kid growing up on a ranch.  We were raising chickens and I was so excited when the chicks began hatching from the eggs.  I watched as one began pecking through the shell.  My dad had taught me to never try to "help" the chick get out of the egg... but after what seemed like forever and it appeared that the chick was having such a hard time and may never get out, ...and I really wanted that chick out of the egg so I could hold the fluffy little guy - I reached down and tried to help speed up the process by breaking open the eggshell just a little.  What transpired after that was one of life's great lessons.  First of all I learned that Dad's usually know what they are talking about and it would be wise for a little 7 or 8 year-old to listen and follow Dad's counsel even when I didn't understand the reasons behind it.  And secondly; resistance, trials and adversity are as important to our growth and development in life as the air we breathe.

As I'm sure you already guessed; due to the lack of resistance caused by my opening of the eggshell, the poor baby chick's muscles were never allowed to develop properly and the stamina and fortitude that the chick needed to make it on its own were never gained.  The weak baby chick died soon thereafter.

So Jeffrey, I applaud your efforts to greet the resistance in your life with a smile on your face. You obviously have learned, like Joe, that "we experience ourselves at our best, when we're outside our comfort zones."  --Kudos!
