I first wrote about WCPSS in one of my FIRST posts to Activerain in December of 2007... and then I wrote again last December about the fact that that Wake County had A SCHOOL in the top 25 in the Country - but these were kids who had NOT been bussed all over the county for the last 10 years!  (read more here)

My point is that the people who were protesting last night about the changes coming to WCPSS have not been listening!  There's a HUGE problem IMHO when a SCHOOL SYSTEM allows HIGH SCORING at risk kids to be "tracked" at a NON-AG status... let me say that again, for all of the people who think this is DISCRIMINATION...

For over TEN YEARS right here in Wake County - if you were an AT RISK (read F&R Kid) and you tested WELL in fifth grade in Math - you were NOT put on the AG track... you were with the slow kids.  That my friends is discrimination - and THAT is what the WCPSS is trying to CHANGE.

Why can't we take a lesson from the Harlem Children's Zone?  Why don't we try SOMETHING DIFFERENT that will actually help these kids???  This is about POVERTY - not DISCRIMINATION.  I truly, in my heart of heart want what is TRULY best for ALL of the kids in this county - and I think we could be headed in the RIGHT direction!

Eleanor, a topic that has so many issues right now.  Hopefully everyone will listen with open ears and a resolve will be made that betters our children's education - after all that's the point of all of this isn't it.
