NASCAR Nation: Battle at Bristol 500

Sorry for the delay in writing this.  I have been unapologetically busy as of late (I'm not complaining, believe me!).  I always make time to stop down and watch the NASCAR Sprint Cup races.  The battle at Bristol 500 was no different.  With rain threatening to overtake the track at anytime, the first short track race of the season brought on some great racing.  Early on, Kurt Busch's blue deuce had a strong showing, as did Jimmie Johnson's #48 and Greg Biffle's #16.  The lead changed hands almost two dozen times throughout the race as well.  Luckily, the rain that was pelting the Bristol area only brought sprinkles twice throughout the race.  This was nothing that the blowers and the hot tires of the drivers under caution couldn't dry out, thank goodness!  Tire wear seemed to be an issue for several drivers, with five of the ten cautions coming out due to flat tires.  Since the drivers couldn't get down to pit row through the conveyor belt of cars to fix their flat tires, caution flags had to come out.

At lap 344, the big one hit.  Greg Biffle and Mark Martin (#5) got into each other while up towards the front of the pack, creating a 13 car pile up as drivers couldn't "whoa up" quickly enough.  Biffle managed to only experience light damage.  Unfortunately for my favorite little jockey, Martin ended up spinning and hit several cars.  Besides Mark and Greg, David Ragan (#6), Robbie Gordon (#7), Joey Logano (#20), Jeff Gordon (#24), Kevin Harvick (#29), Ryan Newman (#39), Juan Pablo Montoya (#42), Jimmie Johnson (#48), Martin Truex Jr (#56), Brian Vickers (#83) and Carl Edwards (#99) experienced some damage in the incident.

Even though Jimmie got caught up in the crash, he managed to win the race 156 laps later.  This makes win #3 for the #48 team, folks, and we're only finished with 5 races so far for the season.  It looks like Jimmie is on his way to an unheard of 5-in-a-row championship.  The Jimmie Johnson/Chad Knaus team seem quite unstoppable right now.  This is also the last race of the year with the rear wing on the cars.  We'll see how this affects racing next week.

Jimmie Johnson wins the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway on March 22, 2010.On Sunday, March 28, Fox will be broadcasting the Nascar Sprint Cup Race at 1pm EST from another short track: Martinsville.

Top 5 Finishers for Bristol 500:

1. Jimmie Johnson #48
2. Tony Stewart #14
3. Kurt Busch #2
4. Greg Biffle #16
5. Matt Kenseth #17

I'll have to check out the Jr chat, Wallace.  First time I heard.  Luckily, I've been extremely busy right now.

Just saw the write up on NASCAR.com about Jr's rant.  I totally forgot about that from Bristol.  I remember thinking that the only one he could blame for speeding was himself since everything is computerized.  No human error that way.  I didn't realize it was such a big deal.  Interesting.
