"In The Navy!" Life on the Kitsap Peninsula

As I have mentioned in some previous posts, the Kitsap Peninsula is proud to be home to a very large military community who faithfully serve at various locations in the surrounding area that make up Naval Base Kitsap. Naval Base Kitsap is comprised of the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, the Bangor Submarine Base, the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Keyport, and various surface ships and submarines homeported at Bremerton and Bangor.

SUBASE Bangor was originally one of the sites for shipping ammunition to the Pacific theater during World War II. Construction of the current base began in 1974 and was officially activated in February of 1977 as the homeport for the first squadron of TRIDENT submarines. Since that time, SUBASE Bangor has won numerous awards including "Best Base in the Navy."

I know SUBASE Bangor firsthand. Our house is only a few minutes away from the south gate of the base. In addition, when I served in the Navy back in the late 70's, I was stationed onboard the USS George Washington (SSBN-598), the world's first nuclear ballistic missile submarine. Shortly after we pulled out of dry dock at Mare Island Naval Shipyard, we transited up to SUBASE Bangor to on load missiles. I spent several wonderful months back then, enjoying the beauty of Hood Canal as we were tied to the pier at SUBASE Bangor.

SUBASE Bangor is an amazing self-contained, city-within-a-city. In addition to single and family housing units, you'll find a McDonalds, Subway, a movie theater, bowling alley, grocery store, gas station, chapel, and more.

I am grateful to live in a community that is made up of dedicated service men and women who are stationed here, along with their families. Their devoted patriotism makes the Kitsap Peninsula a wonderful place to call home.

Rich,

My house is located a mile outside of the back gate of the Submarine Base, Groton, CT.  My husband served on the Casimar Pulaski and the George Marshall back in the 70's.

Linda, I knew some guys who served on the Marshall. I went to Sub school there in Groton. And the sail from the George Washington is still on display there. Thanks for your comments!

Rich, I was in the Navy from 1970 to 1974 and spent three of those years on the Aircraft Carrier US Ranger CVA-61. We were stationed out of Alameda, CA.  It would have been great to have pulled into port into Naval Base Kitsap, it looks beautiful.  Heck if I had been stationed there I might have become a Lifer.  Thank you for the memories.

George, I grew up in the Bay Area, and know Alameda well. I spent two weeks on the Midway, which was enough to make me feel thankful that I was on a sub! Good Times!

Yah Rich, I look back now with a smile, but back then sleeping in a compartment that wasn't much bigger than some of the bathrooms built in house today with 30+ guys wasn't a lot of fun. But then again they probably put 60 guys in that same space on a sub.  I did enjoy the Bay Area, and that is where I met my wife.  I have only been back once since then, but would love to go back again. That is on my list of things to do.

Rich!

I was searching for some info on MM3 Vantine and ran across your page.

Don't know if you remember me, but I was on the GW too til July '77 when I got caught up in one of the infamous busts.  Weren't you originally from MN too?

Anyway, I used to room with Maurice Vantine and was trying to locate him.

Any ideas?

Thanks and take care,

Mike Berg  ex MM3

Duh!  Just was looking through some old photos and it appears we were classmates in sub school as well!

Along with Bruce Bierman and  Ed Holexa (who left the boat with me).

Regards,

Mike B

Hey, Mike!

Nice to hear from you! I seem to remember you. Do you have a pic of yourself back then you could send?

I live 5 minutes from the Bangor Subase where we pulled in to onload missiles after leaving the shipyard.

We lost a lot of guys to busts during the refit in MINSY. I was from California, in fact, just about 50 minutes from Vallejo.

I've made contact with several guys, but haven't run across any of the A gangers. I remember Vantine, Miley, Bug Dunford, and the chief that was a major pain in the butt!
