Now on the post:  Nashville Home Inspection - Asbestos Duct Tape - What Wrong With this Picture?

HINT:  What's that white stuff on the old ductwork?  And, the house is over 70 years old.

Ductwork asbestos

ANSWER:  Probably asbestos.  And it is loose and frayed.  This should be removed or covered in such a way that it cannot disperse into the air.

Thank you,

I saw ductwork the other day that was completely wrapped with duct tape.  When I asked why, they said it had been done to help contain aspestos.  I wondered if that was accepabe.  i'm sure you've seen all kinds!

Hi Verlyn,

I suppose the duct tape method would work.  At least it is an attempt at containment.  Removal is preferred but may not always be practical.  In this pic you are seeing newer insuflex duct taped to the older metal duct.  Too bad they didn't go the extra mile and remove the asbestos-like wrap as well.  Or at least contain it.

Thanks,

Richard Acree
