A recent study of over 1,000 Americans conducted by Retrevo provides some pretty staggering results on the role of social media in people's lives.  Fortunately, they provided a variety of different infographics to showcase the results of their findings.

Before you view the graphics though, it's important to determine the details of the study.

As already stated, this study was conducted with a sample size of over 1,000 Americans. This sample size was distributed across gender, age, income and location in the United States.

So why is this important? Well, knowing this information tells us the following infographics are not just generalized statistics, but can be segmented across various ages, incomes, genders and locations. This now allows you to develop a stronger idea on how your target market is making use of social media in their lives.

Now that you know the following infographics can help you segment the impact of social media in your target market, have a look at their results.  Do these results lead one to believe that social media has become an addition?  You decide.

Ha! One of the reasons I wanted to get an Ipad was to blog in bed. Now I'll rethink that - the idea of all those people checking in online from bed kind of gives me the willies. Wonder how the sample set was selected - I hope those numbers aren't reflective of the general public - I really can't imagine that they are.

@Liz Well, according to Retrevo (who conducted the study), they state they selected 1,000 Americans to take part in this study, all of which were a combination of different ages, genders, income levels and locations in the United States.  While it is difficult to state how true this is to eveyone in general, I thought these results were pretty surprising with the sample size that was used.

Well.......like Radio, TV, and even newspapers and magazine junkies media in general is an "addiction" for many people. How many people go to sleep with the TV or Radio on? I will admit that if I want to get the news first hand from people that are at the scene, like the recent earthquakes, or other developing stories I turn to Twitter before I turn on the TV. But if it was not Twitter it would be CNN. As it relates to our business, I don't think we are ready as a society to rely solely on Social Media for our marketing and communications efforts. The way I look at social media is for interactions and to make connections. I do not bring Social Media to my bedroom butt it certainly is a big part of my life.
