DETROIT PEOPLE MOVER.....  In 1987, the Mayor of Detroit, Coleman A. Young, had a vision for getting the people of downtown Detroit from one business place to another more effeciently.  He wanted to be able to create a mass transit that would make other cities sit up and take notice.

From that idea the Detroit People Mover was born.  It is an elevated loop track with a tDETROIT PEOPLE MOVERotal distance of 2.9 miles. There are thirteen stations along the route. Eight of those stations have been incorporated into existing businesses  which allows a rider to get from one business to another without going out into the elements and if you have ever spent a winter in Detroit, that is a plus.

The Detroit People Mover can travel at a top speed of fifty six miles per hour and complete a round trip ride in about fifteen minutes. Each station stop lasts about twenty seconds and the fare per ride is only fifty cents.  A rider traveling along the route can get to any business within the downtown area with great ease.

It doesn't matter if you want to go to the courthouse, the bank, the water department, the post office, the drug store, the flower shop or the clothing store.                    Are you hungry for lunch or dinner? There is an unlimited number of different restaurants around the loop. You can go for a coney dog, an elaborate fine dining establishment or you can go into Greektown for an international flare or to play some games at the casino.

Getting to sporting events is easy. Want to go to a Red Wings hockey game? There is a station in Joe Louise Arena.  Comerica Park, the home of the Detroit Tigers is right across the street from Ford Field, the home of the Detroit Lions and they are both just blocks away from the Detroit People Mover station.

General Motors headquarters fountainGeneral Motors headquarters in the Renaissance center has a station inside the building. You can ride the people mover to that sation, go through the headquarters building to get to the waterfront of the Detroit river. Right on the riverfront you will see people playing in the fountains.

Cobo Center hosts the NAIAS every January. This one event alone brings visitors from around the world. With a station right inside Cobo Center visitors can get from the show to their hotels in comfort. While in town people can go to Campus Martius Park in front of the Compuware headquarters and enjoy some outdoor ice skating in

The people mover has allowed more people to enjoy the many attractions that are in downtown Detroit. From the free country music fest known as the downtown hoedown in the spring all the way to the free jazzfest on Labor day weekend. And in between there is the fourth of July International Freedom Festival Fireworks on the river front shared by two countries, Canada and the US which draws almost one million people downtown.

Come to Detroit. Stay awhile. Visit our many attractions. You will enjoy yourself............when you ride the Detroit People Mover.
