Getting Wide Angle Video with Your Flip Mino or Zi8 Camera

I love Flip Video!

I love the Kodak Zi8 even more because it has an external microphone jack, so I can get much better audio on my home tours.

What I don't love is trying to get the bathroom shot in High Definition. Those who have one of these cameras can completely understand, the field of view is just to narrow to get hallways, bathrooms, ceilings and floors without pan all over the place.

So I decided to pimp out my Zi8 with a Wide Angle Lens hack! Take a look.

Please tell us more about why you love the Zi8 more! I have been thinking about buying the Flip, but had heard somewhere else that the Zi8 might be a better choice. How do they compare price-wise?

Great Question Bob.

The Zi8 does 1080p, 720p @ 60 Frame per Second, 720p, WVGA and Great Still Shots.

What does all that mean, well, great video for lot's purposes, 702P for High Definition Video Tours is what I really like, WVGA fro standard wide screen video.  The ability to do still shots is great, something you can't do with the Mino.

The Mino HD does not allow an external Microphone.  Have you ever been outside ready to film and the wind is blowing.  It's horrible on video, but with a external mic, you can cut that noise to nothing, I bought a simple handheld mic with a 15ft cable, I film my wife as she walks thorugh the home talking about.  She sounds great close, far facing me or facing away.  So when it comes to audio the Zi8 wins hands down.

The Kodak has image stabilization as well which make sit a bit easier to hold things still while panning.

Both are very easy to use, however I think the Flip Mino is a tad easier, just a TAD mind you.

That the quick run down.  I don't think you can go wrong with either, the Kodak just a has few better features.

I will say this, the Mino Software is much better than the Kodak Software.  I recommend buying Cyberlink Power Director for video editing and not using the Kodak Software.  So include that when comparing the price.

Thank you, Tom. That external microphone really sounds like a big advantage. I'll buy one or the other after my next closed escrow, but you have me leaning toward the Kodak. The software is something else I'll need to consider.
