Tucked away right on the shore of the Long Island Sound, the Village of Larchmont is a world away and just 35 minutes by train from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan. Larchmont is a desirable community and homes for sale in Larchmont sell very quickly – even in a slow market. In 2005 CNN/Money and Money Magazine ranked Larchmont 11th in their 100 best places to live survey.
The village itself is located in the town of Mamaroneck and many homes with the Larchmont post office are actually located in the unincorporated area of the town of Mamaroneck. The same holds for the school system with only one elementary school (Chatsworth Ave.) being located within the village of Larchmont.
Prior to the turn of the century, Larchmont was something of a resort community for the wealthy of New York. The opulent turn-of -the-century homes located along the Long Island Sound near Manor Park are reminiscent of that era.
Manor Park itself, is a wonderful destination for those wanting to relax and enjoy the view or walk the dog. I have frequented the park with my pets on many occasions and it is always peaceful and beautifully landscaped. Although its a private park the people living in the Manor graciously leave it open to the public from dawn until dusk. You can click on the link for more photos and information about the history of Manor Park.
The village itself is something of a bedroom community, but with a high-end flair. There are plenty of small boutique shops, high end coffee houses including Starbucks and plenty of fine dining. Many residents choose to eat out on their way home from work. People gather at their favorite restaurants including Larchmont Tavern and Chat 19. The fact that everything is very walkable contributes to the friendly village atmosphere. People tend to leave the car and walk.
For those who prefer a more urban perspective, Larchmont is just a one exit from the heart of downtown New Rochelle which has plenty of shopping and nightlife.
Some famous people who have lived in Larchmont include:
Timothy Geithner – our current Treasury Secretary,
Maruice Barrymore of the famous Barrymore family
Douglas Fairbanks
Mary Pickford
Joan Rivers
