I Always Think Of My GrandMother This Time Of Year

My grandmother has been gone many years now. She passed in her 90's...but I always think of her in the spring because she was such an avid gardener.  She loved to pull weeds and fortunately I am married to a wonderful gardener wife who also loves to pull weeds. :O)

Anyway my grandmother who we called Big Mama,  ( she weighed a hundred dripping wet)  was talking to my brother one day as he was leaving to go to a local gym.  He was telling her about how it was a bargin for what he was paying.

She looked at him in disbelief and said " you actually pay someone to exercise?!  Darn...I'll pay you to exercise...start pulling weeds!

I only have a few items left of Big Mama's but my favorite or the royal purple Irises that came to Texas via covered wagon many years ago. my wife and I have kept the bulbs going every year for twenty years and intend to hand them down to my grandmothers great -great grand kids. ....which means they originated with their great-great-great-great grandmother!

Hi Trey-

How great that you have such wonderful memories of your grandmother and her beautiful garden. I'm sure that those irises will live on and on - like those stories of your grandmother.

What a perfect way to keep your grandmother in the minds of future generations. Seeing bulbs flower year after year gives a sense of continuity, and connects us to something larger than ourselves. A beautiful tribute.

I enjoyed reading your heartfelt post about your grandmother and I think it is so nice that you have bulbs that go back so far in history.  What a wonderful tradition to pass on through the generations!

Beautiful story about the iris bulbs, your grandmother left more than that garden she left the children and the grandchildren and on and on, that is really the most important thing we leave behind. The real garden.

How wonderful to have those magnificent iris passed down in your family.  I love trading plants with friends and relatives.  Great story!
