Man picking a houseSTOP!  Choose Your House Wisely!

Be Sure to Check Out the Neighborhood…

Unfortunately, there is no “cooling off” period when you buy a home.  If you're considering buying a home,  be sure and do your “home” work.  Here are a few suggestions that I give my buyers when we are thinking of putting in an offer or have put in an offer.

  • Drive by the house at different times of the day to see what is going on in the neighborhood, especially on a weekend night.

  • Talk to the neighbors - the homeowners may not tell the "whole" truth but you can bet their neighbors will!

  • Take a look at the homes in the area - are the lawns green and maintained, are the streets clear of congestion, are the homes kept up?

  • Take some extra time to just sit and listen - what do you hear? Airplanes? Trains? Kids? Dogs? Traffic? Are the sounds acceptable to you?

  • Are the amenities you want close by? Are you close to friends and family, your children's schools, your favorite stores, where you work, etc?

  • Have you checked out the crime statistics in the neighborhood?  A few websites to check out are:

                     http://www.meganslaw.ca.gov

                     http://www.Crimereports.com

                     http://www.cityrating.com

                     http://www.kcra.com/crime/index.html

                     http://www.crimemapping.com

The bottom line is when you buy a home you need to know not only about the condition of the physical home itself but all the conditions of the homes surroundings.  Do your investigations first so you won’t be disappointed later!

Excellent advice.  It's so exciting for buyers to find what they think is the perfect house.  I don't want to dampen their enthusiasm, but it's not time to fall in love with the house until every important consideration has been checked off the list.

Without a good surrounding neighborhood a house is not a home.

Debbie,

Thanks for the great links.  It's ashame, but that's just a part of our reality.  Crime happens in all our communities, even in the ones we least expect.  I yearn for a time when we could leave our homes open without fear of someone breaking in.
