In the nearly five years I have been a real estate agent I have experienced pretty much the entire gamut of emotions there are.
Being in this industry means having triumphant days where everything seems to work out while other days are best forgotten or at least wish we could forget. The principle of "next" has helped me immensely in bouncing back from disappointment!
So how do you recover from the CMA that you felt you nailed and were promised the listing only to see it come onto the market the next day with another agent?! NEXT!
What about that close friend or relative that knows you are a Realtor® and decides to lists with the competition? NEXT!
How about that couple you worked with for weeks showing them every property on the market only to discover that they bought privately? NEXT!
Then there's the listing where you worked diligently to get the property sold making every effort possible and giving all the right market advice only to have it expire and another agent list it for less and then get it sold mere days later. NEXT!
It really becomes easier to get past disappointments when you put things in the context of time management and simply get a move on to the next lead, CMA, deal etc. I remind myself each day as I head to the office or to an appointment that I am a successful Realtor® whether I feel it at the time or not. Now that's what I do at the start of my day but when things get a bit rough or don't work out the way I planned I don't want to get hung up on them either. So although staying positive helps it doesn't change the fact that I am human and sometimes get down on myself! The ability to keep a short term memory on the inevitable challenges of a day will make for better focus on the things that net results.
The idea of saying "next" out loud will quickly remind you that it is time to regroup and reestablish your focus on making the most of your workday. By being purposeful and deliberate in getting yourself mentally back on track you will become highly effective at the business of real estate. After all, there is only so many hours in a day so why not make the best use of them!?
