Fashion advice on a real estate blog?  Sure... why not?

ShoesSome may see this as fashion, but I see it as practicality and comfort.  To be honest, it doesn't matter to me whether you show up for the home search in a three-piece suit, a leather mini-skirt, plaids clashing with polka dots, or sweatpants.  I just want you to be comfortable and happy for your househunting expedition.

When heading out to go see homes, you'll likely notice that many sellers prefer that you take off your shoes.  This is especially true when the carpets have just been cleaned and/or new carpets installed.  After all, what potential buyer/new owner wants to mess up their own future home with dirt from the outside.  Many homeowners selling their homes post signs admonishing potential buyers to "Please Remove Your Shoes!"

I learned this lesson a long, long time ago and generally wear my slip-on shoes as to avoid the repeated tying and untying of shoelaces during a lengthy home search.  However, some of my clients are not as well-informed about this minutiae of the home search process.

Barefoot househuntingUntil today, I had never thought to warn my clients and present them with a dress code.  However, I felt very sorry for one of my clients who had to remove her shoes at the 8 homes we visited today and walk around with bare feet on cold marble, tile, and wood floors!

ATTENTION HOMEBUYERS:  PLEASE WEAR SOCKS WHILE HOUSEHUNTING!

Wear WHITE socks and check for FLEAS.....Old property manager's trick from a VINTAGE property manager!!!

Walk through a house where there are fleas and they will be ALL OVER the socks in less than 3 minutes!!

Socks are a great idea -- but nothing is more embarrassing than removing your shoes and having a toe sticking out of a big hole in your sock!!

I purchase hopital booties from www.mountainwestmfg.com and leave them in a basket in many  of my listings. I also have a small sign that asks that folks please remove their shoes OR slip on a pair of booties. They hold up well, can be re-used and are inexpensive. Share an order with other agents in your office if you don't think you'll use them all soon.
I guess you could bring them along when showing houses as well!

Maybe I just have too much common sense, but I can't believe you would actually have to tell a client to wear socks while house hunting.  One would think they'd have enough sense to know they'll be taking their shoes off.

Which brings me to my next comment to Richard. why put a pair of socks on when you know they have a hole in them?

Roy,

I also keep surgical booties available in a basket, with a sign that says to please remove your shoes or slip on the booties. The booties are great. since you don't have to remove your shoes or be embarrassed about holes or unsightly pedicures....Haha!! They are very cheap and can be re-used many times over!
