Historic Downtown Milledgeville Goergia- Columns and Culture- A wonderful place to call home!

In taking an afternoon stroll down the streets of historic downtown Milledgeville last week my husband commented "I wonder how many columns are with a 6 block radius of here?"  It was retorical because, frankly there are too many to count.  There are many streets in the downtown area that are still residential and it's a wonderful place to live.  It's filled with both columns and culture.  Milledgeville is known as the "First Lady of Georgia."

It would take more than one day to take it all in there is so much to do and see, but a wonderful place to start is the trolley tour.  Historic downtown Milledgeville is a wonderful place to live filled with stately southern mansions, the historic governor's mansion and the capitol where the Georgia legislators voted to secede from the Union during a fascinating period in Georgia and U.S. history.

There are currently 7 homes listed for sale that are located within the historic distric of Downtown Milledgeville Georgia.  All of these homes require an appointment for viewing.  So if you'd like to live in a stately home with columns and have a huge amount of culture and activities right within walking distance of your front door.  And there are some wonderful  places to eat right downtown as well.  Aubri Lane's is where I had my birthday dinner and it's located in an old bank.  Later I'll be posting a review, so be sure to visit my blog regularly so you won't miss that.

Downtown Millegeville, Georgia is the only city in the country built and designed as a state Capital.  The area was surveyed and 84 square acres became the downtown area of Milledgeville, Georgia.  It was in 1804 the the state legislature declared Milledgeville to be the new capital of Georgia.  In 1807 fifteen wagons, escorted by troops, left Louisville, the former capital, carrying the treasury and public records of the state.  The old capital building with its pointed arched windows and battlements marked it as America's FIRST public building in the Gothic revival style.  The former legislation chambers have been used for the current state legislation a couple of times in the past 10 years since the building was restored.  It also now houses a wonderful museum.

Just a few of the wonderful sites to see and things to do within just minutes of downtown Historic Milledgeville are:

So if you are looking for a stately home in a place where you can never run out of things to do and see give me a call and I'd be happy to make an appointment to show you property in downtown historic Milledgeville,  Georgia.

Hi Tammy, The buildings in your photos are just gorgeous.  I love the stately mansions and the columns.  I'm trying to remember if we toured any on our vacation to Atlanta - but I was just a kid, so I don't remember.  You've done a great job with the tour and information for Milledgeville, Tammy- it looks like a wonderful place!

Tony- I loved the convenience of living downtown for take out, but I also enjoy my one acre of land I have now too.

Scott- I'm going to have to check out where your home is and see some of them

Thanks Diane

Jane- Been home for nearly half a century, I should know it huh?  Thanks

Mary- I loved when I lived in that old house downtown, with the exception of my sleep time.  One of these days I'll write a post about why I think that house in one of the haunted ones.

Sheldon- Thanks, I'm having a lot of fun with it.  Of course... I've also be completely swamped with leads and working with two buyers while trying to keep on task of one every other day... but I shall not complain about being busy.

Diane- One of my first dates with my husband included a night of dinner and theater... dinner was in the governor's mansion.  It was wonderful... and I can't even remember what we ate.  I just couldn't stop taking it all in the building was so beautiful.

A trolley tour... then count me in Tammy! What a great blog post for someone thinking of moving into the area. Heck it's great for those who live there and might not realize what treasures they have at their back door!

Cyn- you know, funny you say that.  I've lived her forever and I've never gone on the trolley tour.  They have a "haunted" tour in October.  I promise myself I'm going on that one this year.
