Uxbridge residents, or their counterparts in the other areas of Durham Region get to elect all but one of the people who sit on their Local and Regional Council.
Currently The Regional Chair is not elected by the people yet this person gets to vote on your behalf.
Should the most powerful position on Regional Council not have to face the voters? For my money he should be accountble to the electorate in the same manner as every other member of council. The Region is considering putting the question of an elected or appointed chair on the next municipal ballot in some form or another.
The captain of the ship that spends a good portion of the property tax bill should be accountable to the ones paying for what his vote buys. If the position was simply one that chaired with no vote or say then the current process may be an option.
