The Conversation...Medium vs Message?

By

I vividly recall the look of that room.  The one which held the computers in my freshman year of high school. Everything felt sterile to me...white walls, white desks, white ceiling and a black screen that blinked with electronic gibberish.  Instead of facing my fellow students or the teacher, I was staring at that screen and trying to comprehend WHY I had to have anything to do with this box.  I remember leaving the class and determining never to have anything to do with computers again if I could help it! The year was 1979.

What a difference a few decades makes!

Fast forward to 1996, the year I launched my first website which utilized FTP protocol.  My cousin who was studying computer science convinced me to be his guinea pig.  When he asked me how often I planned on checking e-mail, I said...'oh, about once a month.'  After all, who needed to check e-mail when you could pick up the phone and call someone

What a difference perspective creates!

My initial assumption about computers was that they were cold boxes, devoid of life.  I wanted little orenjoying a cup of tea nothing to do with them.  I initially failed to comprehend how communication could be improved or enhanced by sending a message online rather than calling someone to talk.

I still laugh about how resistant I was to a tool which I now use daily to communicate with people from all over the country.  But, I'm also struck by the fact that assumptions don't die...they simply change vehicles of transmission.

Today, Facebook and Google are in the process of re-defining the process of communication.

Our thirst for information can be quenched in seconds.  The creation of a thought dispensed to hundreds through a tweet or a status update. But, yet I wonder if we are assuming that conversation and communication are the same thing. Perhaps they are, but maybe they are not.

What a difference communion makes!

Have we forgotten that a cup of coffee or a home cooked meal creates a communion which undresses the soul to reveal that which cannot be penetrated by a brief pithy statement.  Are we skating multiple surfaces while remaining in a state of distracted oblivion?

I'm struck by the power of a conversation.  The simple act of sitting down and looking at someone...listening and engaging them with thoughtful intention.  Conversation has a way of creating connections which elude the world of casual contacts.

Medium vs Message...

Maybe it's not about the medium or the message.  Perhaps, the real issue is intention. My earlier assumptions that technology was sterile and devoid of life were not entirely true. Today my use of technology shapes the dialog with folks as it weaves it's way through various dimensions of the virtual universe. But yet, there's nothing quite like a shared cup of tea enjoyed even while surrounded by folks busy checking up on their iPhones, BlackBerrys and laptop computers.

Communication is so immediate now. With real time networks it can't get any faster unless time travel becomes a reality. Just to add yo your thoughtful post, it isn't about content anymore. If it was then the media is the message as McLuhan once said. It is not context is king or queen depending on your frame of reference.

Hi Jeff, Thanks for your comment.  It's amazing how much has changed isn't it?

Loreena, your comment made me laugh because I can truly relate! :)

Kristal, when I first started using computers with clients, I would always bring down the screen when talking.  It took me awhile to appreciate that looking at a screen together could be a 'shared' experience which helped to educate and inform the individual I was working with.

Chris...you're one of the lucky few who had the advantage of the insights obtained from a computer degree while people like me were running away from them. :)

Sharon...oh my word...I was totally in agreement back then. :)

David, appreciate your perspective.  That's the world my kids live in too.  So different from mine.

One prop...Thanks for your comment

John, appreciating the fact that technology could be an extension of my communication was a vital key for me too.

Christopher...LOL...some of us actually did things like talk on the phone and in person with people face to face.

Tammie...I heard a statistic recently that indicated that the fastest growing group of users on Facebook is women between 55-65 who love using it to keep up with grandkids! :)

Joan...totally agree.  My business has definitely benefited from this medium.  But more importantly, I've met so many wonderful people whom I never would have met as well.

Dawn...thank you for your gracious comment/compliment. :)

Lloyd...yep, I debated putting that date in there. :) Actually it was ME who responded that I only checked e-mail once a month at the time.  My cousin was appalled.

Steve...oh my goodness...the Commodore computer...  Had totally forgotten about that brand.

Rebecca...things have definitely changed a lot since then.  Was your first computer a mainframe?

Scott...my kids are the same way.  A few years ago, the youngest asked me if I had ever used a typewriter. Imagine that!

Frank...punch cards!  You have a long history with computers.  I'm sure it continues to be a remarkable journey.  Makes you wonder what our interaction will look like in the next decade doesn't it?

Connie...LOL, I entered real estate just as the cards were being phased out.  But, I remember that there was a lot of contention from those who did NOT want to give them up. :)

Randy...amazing to think of all that power in the palm of our hands isn't it?

Barbara...if you would have told me I'd be using computers this much, I would have looked at you as though you had lost your mind.  I didn't even like playing games on them.  Amazing...but true. :)

Cherise...good point.  The verdict on this is still out in my opinion.  I have had some great meetings which started with online contacts.  The meeting with fellow Active Rainers in Chicago when Active Rain celebrated it's first online Birthday approximately 3 years ago was one example.

Dorrie...that's been a great element of connecting with folks that I would never keep in touch with. Facebook has been an effective way to keep up with lots of people whom I had lost touch with over the years.

Charita...I was in college when I first heard about e-mail from my husband who was in grad school.  Now e-mail seems almost old fashioned.

Pam...we were the first to experience computers in our highschool, but it took me awhile to get hooked. :)

Ron & Alexandra...it will be interesting to see how things continue to change and transform.

Joe...I'd tend to agree with your observation.  Although content is still important, my sense is that Relationship is what ultimately matters.  This can easily be overlooked because of the overwhelming amount of content which is available today.

Erica...good point!

I'm a bit of a gadget gal these days, but back in 1985, when I tried to write my first paper on a computer and watched it eat the whole thing backwards, character by character, I swore I'd never use the dumb thing again.  Talk about eating my words. BTW - My boyfriend never did figure out which key I hit to make it do that :  )

Christine, sounds like your Backspace key got stuck...that happened to me once. What a feeling to see everything you just agonized over writing disappear, and not know what you did! I was whacking the keyboard, trying every key to make it stop!

Lola, As a computer science major - I can't tell you the number of people who chose the field because their experiences with computers (and even the early internet) were SO intriguing.  I'm so glad it's spread the world over.

Christine & Pat & Wayne... LOL, it's stuff like that which made had me declaring a ban on computers if I could help it.  And even more recently, I vividly recall entire blogs being deleted because they weren't saved.  Whacking the keyboard was just the start of dealing with the frustration at times. :)

Marc...that thought intrigues me!

Jill...that's interesting.  For me, the experience drove me in the other direction initially.  But, it's amazing to think how central the computer is to my life today.  Things definitely change!

Lola, it is interesting to see how times have changed. I too HATED computers, just didn't "get them".

Thanks for reminding me how far I have come because I now love technology. LOL

Lola it is interesting to see how things have changed.  I did have an early introduction with computers working with AT&T.  At first I was intimidated by the personal PC I suppose because at first many of the programs were games and I just did not have the time for that,  Now technology gives us the opportunity to connect with friends and family all over the world, it is as if all ofthis was always here.

Hi Missy,  I enjoyed your webinar today.  Unfortunately, I had a few calls which prevented my listening to the whole thing, but what I could catch was very good.  I would never have imagined that I'd use technology as much as I do today.

Cheryl, thanks for your comment.

Jennifer, it's amazing to think how much things have changed & somewhat daunting to consider how much they will continue to change.  Thanks for dropping by tonight!

Nice post Lola,
It is interesting that with the growth of technology, some very easy and affordable tools are still held in modest regard. When I think of the "Medium versus Message, I instantly think of email. This obsolete mode of communication can wreck a first impression if crafted well. On the other hand, even if you are not a video "star", video mail delivers any message that email can, better and in many cases faster.

In my opinion electronic communication offers the a perfect example of how the medium and the message can diverge after you click "send". I bet there are many here who have sent a text based message to many and in return received responses that indicate the content was not understood as intended. Worse, if a text based email is the opportunity for a first impression, get the dice out and hope you don't "text" craps.

Now I will admit to avoiding texting like it was the plague. There I still believe that why should one text when you can dial. Even a voice mail can be more clear than some of the texting "shorthand".

On the other hand, I seldom send text based email anymore since video delivers more a compelling message in many cases, faster than text mail and is more likely to be understood as I intend.

Best wishes,

Yeah, it's pretty crazy how we communicate these days. Perfect example, my childhood friend lives around the block from me. I never see him, can never get him on the phone but the second I'm online, there he is chatting my fingers off.

Put 40 years of experience to work for you

When computers first hit the scene, I thought they were for a secretary or an assistant to use. So, I didn't spend much time finding out how they operate. It wasn't until the mid-1980s that I began to take an interest in computers. Now, I am so entrenched that I rarely get time to sit down with a friend, but I do try to grab at least one lunch date each week to catch up with friends.
