Coming soon: Oakville's newest neighbourhood will be developed north of Dundas Street (highway 5) stretching up to Highway 407 with Tremaine Road as the western boundary and Ninth Line the boundary to the east.
Town plans call for a population of 50,000 residents in this area with employment opportunities for nearly 35,000 people. This will be an addition to the current population of over 170,000. Running through this area is the Natural Heritage System, 900 hectares of protected land, made up of woodlots, open fields, valleys and watercourses. The Town of Oakville hopes to preserve the natural resources in this area and balance that with sustainable, community-conscious development initiatives.
Similar to Oakville's Oak Park subdivision by Tribute Communities, the plans for these new neighbourhoods are to be transit-friendly and walkable to amenities. I would imagine the home designs will offer work/live units similar to what have been recently built in downtown Oakville and Bronte. The hopes are that people will do away with the second vehicle and take advantage of local transit.
Oakville's vision is to integrate natural and open spaces with a mix of housing and employment opportunities. This is being touted as a compact urban community which conjures up the image of higher density. A great community includes a mix of housing types along with parkland, open spaces, schools, recreation facilities and amenities.
It will be interesting to watch this new area develop. The first section ready to be built on is at the intersection of Dundas St. and Neyagawa Blvd. across from the almost complete new quad pad arena. A historical home on the property, the Emily Biggar house was recently razed to allow construction to begin.
The property had been removed from the Town's register of heritage homes due to its poor condition but had been extensively photographed for historical purposes.
It won't be long before we see builder's signs on the property to attract potential buyers for Oakville's newest neighbourhoods.
