NYC, Bloomberg and the Ticket Blitz

Managing Real Estate Broker with Brooklyn/Manhattan Real Estate

As we all know, our country is going through an economic crisis. They keep saying that it’s getting better, but from where I stand, it doesn’t look that way except for the people who have money taking advantage of the low mortgage rates and real estate prices. In general, I see people making less, but still having to pay the high prices for produce, gas and real estate taxes.

I pride myself on being a safe driver and know I’m not the best, but we are only human. A few years back, I never got a ticket. I went for many years without getting one ticket; I’m not the kind of person who poses a threat to anyone on the roads: just a normal driver. The past 2 years I have seen more tickets and driving infractions than I ever have in my whole life.

Early in the morning, I see vans filled with these “Meter Maids” dropped off in my neighborhood everyday with one specific goal in mind “Give everyone a ticket”. Years ago, when there was no parking to be found, it was ok for someone to run into a school to pick up their children, drop a letter in the mailbox or pick up grandma from the doctor. The local cop would give you a warning before writing a ticket. Now they scan your VIN number as soon as you walk away from your car, no warning… Very sneaky, pretty disgusting.

As a kid in NYC, we use to have “The Beat Cop”. He was the local police officer that walked a neighborhood beat, everyone knew him. Again, you got a warning when double parked of doing some minor traffic infringement. Now, in any given neighborhood in NYC we have no beat cops and they usually are not from that neighborhood. We have “Professional ticket givers with guns”. I literally ran into an office to give keys back to an off (being double parked) and ran out to find two police officers giving me a ticket. A person walking by told me they were hiding behind a telephone pole waiting for me to get in the office.

I usually pay any ticket I get fairly quick, but sometimes you just don’t have it in your budget that week or might forget. NYC’s new policy to this is to tow your car. I had two (2) tickets on my record and had my car towed. This is ridiculous! I know our city is broke, but The Mayor feels he can rape the pockets of the good people here who are suffering in this city also. I’m slowly seeing this city turn into a military state. I get stressed every time I see a police officer now, and I am a normal citizen!!!

I miss my old NYC.

Thats ashame Luke.  Funny, because I'm in a suburb of Philly and although they are like parking Nazis downtown I'd like to have that for a week in this quiet suburban town just to whip people into shape.  Since we don't have a huge parking problem people park however they want even if it could be dangerous for kids on the street or just rude.
