Experience the Historic District of Como MS

Como MS, that small town of approximately 1,500 people that borders the Mississippi Delta, is known for 3 things:  The Como Steakhouse, Bluesman Mississippi Fred McDowell, and beautiful old homes.  I call these homes "character homes".

Como MS is located in north Panola County about 45 minutes south of Memphis TN.  To get to the historic district of Como MS, take the Como MS exit off of I-55 and head west.  Stay in the right lane and turn at the Mississippi Blues Trail Sign.  This row of old buildings along with the homes and churches located on the neighboring roads make up the historic district of Como MS.

The Como Steakhouse serves wonderful steaks that are prepared over open charcoal pits.  They also offer salmon, shrimp, chicken and catfish.  This restaurant is housed in a 125 year old former mercantile store.  The attire is casual and reservations are recommended for weekends.  The address is 201 S. Main and the phone number is 662-526-9529.

Bluesman Mississippi Fred McDowell (1904-1972) is often credited as being the father of Hill Country Blues.  As with many great blues artists, McDowell was very popular in Europe where he toured with The Rolling Stones.  There is an historic monument on Main Street to mark the memory of Mississippi FredHill Country Blues McDowell.  For more information on Hill Country Blues, visit the Hill Country Blues Facebook Fan Page.

Como MS is also known for its many distinctive homes, "character homes".  Architect Andrew Johnson (1844-1921), originally of Sweden, designed many of the famous homes, churches, and other buildings in the Mid-South area.

 Como MS Victorian

Currently, there are 4 homes for sale in and around Como MS that are over 100 years old.

The second one is a 110-year old, 3,000 sqare foot home on 2 acres.  This home has a beautifully remodeled kitchen and is offered at an incredible $155,000.

Also in Como MS is a 134-year old Victorian that underwent renovation about 4 years ago.  It is offered at $220,000.

Finally, there is a 175-year old farmhouse on 77 acres with a guest house on the property.  It is offered at $595,000.
