Annual Fort Myers Beach Sand Castle Contest. Fort Myers Beach offers a lot of outdoor activities for visiting guests and families. one of the premier events is the annual sand sculpting festival. The event has grown in stature and ranks among the best in the nation. Invited artists compete for cash and bragging rights over a one week period.
Sculptors are especially drawn to Fort Myers Beach because the structure of the sand is considered as good as anywhere. Looked at under a microscope the sand crystals appear to have a rough surface compared to the rounded edges found in many places. Many contests must import the sand to be used because local sand just doesn't hold together well enough to support the height and weight of modern sculptings !
Families enjoy strolling among the artists and watching their favorites as they progress to completion. Make sure you bring your camera and don't be afraid to ask questions of the sculptors. They enjoy engaging with the visitors to the festival and always take a moment to explain how these works of art are made.
The event is held on the beach in front of the Holiday Inn with bus transportation available from several locations including off island at Lover's Key State Park on the south end of the island.
The sculptors start at approx 9 AM and finish late in the afternoon which allows visitors plenty of time to enjoy the beach and still have time to admire the tremendous talent on display !
