Anyone ever use a labor ready company??

I was discussing with my Project Manager about hiring a Labor Ready company (you call them and they send someone out to give you a hand with moving heavy furniture) or should we hire someone & have to pay him at least minimum wage and offer him insurance (plus Workman's comp ins.).

What works for you when you have a bigger job that requires more labor then you have? I'm leaning toward the Labor company.  I may have to pay little more for the day or two, but I won't have all the extra worries about insurance because the company you hire them from covers that.

Sandra:

I haven't but I've heard some good things about them.  Many times its cheaper than paying someone off the street.

Sandra: We are really lucky to have my grown son as a business partner so he and his friends (plus the husbands of the other partner) handle our heavy lifting. I would be very cautious about using one of these companies for two reasons.....one: these workers are day laborers, no background check and might be undocumented; second they will get a really good look at this home for sale and everything in it.

I had a friend whose roof was replaced by a reputable company and her house was robbed and completely cleaned out. Come to find out, the company used day laborers with no background check and it was two of these guys. They were working there and figured out her schedule and stole everything! I woud be afraid the liabilty would fall on my company since I brought the workers into the job.

If I had to hire this type of help, I would probably contract with someone and send them a 1099 at the end of the year. Just a thought.

Good post!

I know that here in the Chicago-land area those ready labor company's and for that matter the movers are licenced insured and bonded, I wouldn't even think of hiring a company that wasn't. So that takes the liability off me if they get hurt on the job, and I would have my Project Manager on site watching them and placing the furniture where I wanted it working off my action plan that I gave the home owner when I did the walk through consultation. So it was more of the money saved if any if I sub contract labor or if I hire a part time worker and have to worry about carrying Workman's comp ins.
