OUT OF THE PITS ~ Pit Bull Tails To Make You Smile

By
Services for Real Estate Pros

When living in Upstate NY I rescued a horribly abused 3 month old Pit Bull. It was November 2000, she was left outside a building in Schenectady NY, her leash frozen to the ground when my ex found her. I told him to bring her home to me.

When they arrived I had to carry her from the car. I didn't know what I was going to do with this 30lb bundle of frightened fur with big brown eyes, I just knew I had to get her help. She had scars on her face and forelegs that appeared to have come from another animals teeth. She would keep her head down at all times. She had been beaten emotionally and physically.

It just so happened that very night that meteorologist Steve Caporizzo from WTEN News out of Albany who does Pet Connection was going to be in my village of Ballston Spa that very night with Pat and the Greyhounds As Companions folks.

I took my little Pit Bull right into the Greyhound Adoption Clinic and met Steve and Pat, I knew right away I did the right thing. It just so happened a former partner of Pats now ran a Pit Bull rescue organization! Pat also arranged to get a crate for my little Pit Bull as we did not know her past and what she was capable of (would she eat the couch?). Pat, I've never forgotten you!

The very next day I called Pat's former partner Cydney Cross with Out Of The Pits.

She explained she had no room for my little dog at this time and would I be willing to foster her. I said yes, as she was getting along fine with my 2 cats and cocker spaniel. I ended up keeping the little Pit Bull and naming her Snoopie.

Cyd does wonderful things with her organization:

She has EIGHT certified therapy dogs that she takes to nursing homes, rehab centers and hospitals. The patients love them!

She brings these dogs to elementary schools to teach children about the breed, to learn to love them and other animals, to show children that animals love to be loved.

Cyd holds Public Education Clinics so they can learn more about the breed, see their agility, and how easily trained they are and their real history. She also offers Owner Counseling, people don't get how intelligent this breed is! They don't understand how much energy they have, and the love of the Pit Bull for his or her family is incredible. Ownership of a Pit Bull can really be overwhelming if you don't understand them. I didn't get it at first. Snoopies love for me is/was indescribable.

Out Of The Pits has wonderful adoption program. The dogs go through a lengthy testing process before they are allowed into the adoption program. Once they pass they get to go to new homes and have very happy healthy lives. Go have a look at some of these faces. I think you will be surprised at what you see. The faces here are beautiful puppies that just want to be loved.

OutOfThePits.org has 3 touching stories about Pit Bulls, Remembering Van Gogh is a story about how loyal Pits are.

Please stop by OUT OF THE PITS and read more good things about Pit Bulls. You will notice the site mentions at one time they were "America's Favorite Dog". Do you remember this? I will elaborate more on that fact as I continue this series.

In light of the recent media coverage of Dog Fighting I decided it was time to shine a light on the bright side of this beautiful animal.

Pictured here is a Red Nosed Pit Bull named T-Bone. He is my friends brothers 110lb baby.

I have no photos of Snoopie online or I would have posted them. She always had a smile on her face.

Every now and then I send Steve weather photos or whale pictures. He remembers me and Snoopie and my little black cocker. Steve, please tell Pat hi for me!

Lysa, Pits are wonderful dogs.  ALL dogs are wonderful dogs.  You have a wonderful heart and I can't imagine you doing any differently -- there's no way you couldn't have rescued Snoopie.  With all the _____ I keep hearing about Michael Vick, I'm really glad to see that smiling Pit face.

Sarah, Yes, ALL DOGS are wonderful! I hope VICK will never be allowed to play football or get near a dog again.
My friend and I were speaking about that last night and I was telling her good stories I have heard over the years and I said "those are the stories we never hear" this morning I decided to start to tell them.

Lysa is Snoopie still alive?

My brother adopted a deaf pit bull that was a Katrina rescue! Now that is a handful!

I KNOW I commented way earlier today!  I too asked where Snoopie is.,..also I said the poochie up there was a cutie. (I think because they were having problems earlier...I tried to click on a 5 and it said error)  Anway, my doggie was 4 mos. when we got her and she sure is protective of us...took a long time to trust us.

Lysa, I love your stories.  I ended up with tears after this one.  I missed all the hoopla in the news about the pits this week.  Some customers told me about it last night as I showed them a rental property.  They have a dog and we ended up talking about Pits.  I can't stand the fact that they are illegal in Miami-Dade County.  Yes, folks, they are singled out and it is illegal to own one here.  I know someone who has one and it is the sweetest thing.  She's happy sitting on the couch and having you rub her head all day.

I saved a turtle last night and thought of you!  It was slowly making it's way to a very busy street and I asked a neighbor where the nearest body of water was.  He promptly scooped it up and ran to a canal not far away.

Keep making a difference.  There's a lot of animals out there living a better life because you came into it!

Joan, Actually Pits are so smart that your brother has probably got him/her used to hand language commands. What a wonderful thing he has done!

Sally, I had the same problem yesterday when replying to Kims comment.

To both of you about Snoopie: She has gone over the Rainbow Bridge where she is no longer scared of her shadow or the dishwasher, plastic bags, thunder storms, long objects or vacuum cleaners. There were so many times I would sit on the bathroom floor with her and just hold her til the noises went away. She knew her crate was her safe place and would go there when she wasn't feeling good or tired, but she also knew I couldn't fit in there with her, so when she was scared she would hide in the bathroom, the smallest room in the house.

Maggie, This has been in the news for a while. But, now that Vick is being charged it is a bigger story. The pictures they showed made me cry in anger. My next post will be about the Pit at one time being America's Favorite Dog. I hope it is well read. I'm not surprised they are illegal in Miami-Dade, it is sad.

I love you saved the turtle! I've saved two gopher tortise's when I worked beachside. It was a riot. One was trying desperatly to cross A1A! I took them both to a park not far from the office.

Lysa...

I finally made it. My goodness. I think I have read over 50 blogs today.

Okay. On to the topic.

Unfortunately Pits have the rep they have because people do not understand this breed. It is also a shame that they have been used so much in illegal 'dog fights'. As Pits can be trained to do just about anything they can be trained to be fighters.

I'll have to come back and check out the links. I have another 20 or so blogs that need to be read. At this rate I'll be burned out by 4 p.m. :)

TLW...ROAR!

Lysa...my brother is actually teaching his "puppy"(he's about 6months) hand signals! The only problem I have with him isthat the dog is sooo strong he can knock a person over!

I'm so sorry about Snoopie. There are some dogs in this life you never forget! Or replace! Mine was my Tigger she was an Australian sheep herding dog and always knew when I was sad or lonely. We had her for 16 years. She's been gone 22 years....and I still miss her!Snoopie will always be in your heart..

LOL Joan, they are strong pups for sure. They have new agility games for them, pulling contests. Well, I don't know how new, but it's new to me. The dogs love it!

I miss Snoopie a lot, but sometimes we have to put the pet before the person. I had a Australian Shep/Lab mix who now lives with her dad and she was a handful! Very hard to train. I understand about Tigger, totally..

How can one say thank you enough times?  I so very much enjoyed the like to Out Of The Pits.  Dogs are one of the most remarkable creatures that God saw fit to put on this earth.  They love so unconditional.  When a human would strike back a dog will give you the chance to love.Thank you again.:)
