Keeping Watch On West Medford

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Destiny Real Estate Cambridge, MA

We might not have spotted this hawk if it wasn't for the crow that was repeatedly dive bombing the steeple.

Clearly I need a telephoto lens but trust me - he's there - sitting on the cross on the church steeple in West Medford, keeping watch over the neighborhood - or dinner.

Hawks have made a comeback in Boston and Cambridge and nearby towns.  No matter how often I spot one it's always a treat.

Hi Liz.

It's great to know that the hawks are making a comeback in that area.  I'll be visiting the New England area in May so I hope to get a treat.  Not the best picture, but I can see it too.  Thanks for sharing

Hi Pat ~ I love this photo - even if he is just a little dot!  And I figured it's holiday appropriate! Have a great weekend. May the Easter bunny be good to you.

There are lots of red-tailed hawks on the golf courses here.  They are amazing to see and usually eating a squirrel or something.  And here too the crows go nuts.

Liz - that is a great photo, even tho' the hawk is small. The crows dive bomb the red tail hawk in our yard often, and the mockingbirds go after the crows, as do the humming birds on occasion. It is pretty commical to watch sometimes.

Yes Liz, it is holiday appropriate. I needed to read your post to figure out what I was actually supposed to be looking at! I think it's great he was kind enough to pose on the cross for the occasion.

Crows hate hawks??? I didn't know that crows and hawks were in the same category of bird - for some reason, I always thought that hawks were much larger, almost akin to eagles. But is was a great picture nonetheless...and definitely gotta get a lens that can zoom in that close!

Hi Jane ~ I know it's what's on the menu but I can't help but be bummed out when I see them catching a pigeon or some other bird.

Hi Jeff ~ That sounds like quite the backyard show - cool!

Hi Denise - The photo caught my eye when I was going through my lastest downloads. My mother spotted the dive bombing crow when we were pulling up to DD for a coffee break.

Hi William ~ The crows definitely try to harass the hawks - it's often the way you figure out a hawk is nearby.

Hi Liz!  Great photo!  I have seen the occasional hawk, but its always when driving.  I definitely want to get a photo of one.  Of course I have noisy wild parrots that love to hang out in a tree near my bedroom window and wake me up at 5 in the morning.  I think they do it on purpose to see how far out of my skin I can jump.  What I think is squawking is probably them laughing. :)

Hi Andi ~ I so love the idea of parrots flying around outside - I can't tell you. That is too cool.  Even if they're laughing at our expense.

Hi Andrea ~ I've started to look at the highest points of city buildings just in case. But the divebombing crow was a dead giveaway.

Hi Joe ~ No kidding! If I knew you'd lived in Medford I'd lost track. I sell in Medford a lot and can still remember how delighted I was with it the first time we had a house in Lawrence Estates on tour.  Before that my sole exposure to Medford had been the corner closest to Davis Square. I couldn't believe how green and pretty it was with so many appealing houses.

My dad told me that when he was growing up in Cambridge Medford was one of the towns people aspired to - I imagine because so many handsome new houses had been built - first in Brooks Estates and then Lawrence Estates.

Great shot Liz!  We have quite a few hawks in our area and when we our out and about we are always on hawk lookout.  Only once have we ever seen two together sitting on a tree branch.

Hi Linda ~ Thanks! Hope you enjoyed the day too. We got together for breakfast and I had an open house the afternoon. Lots of people out and about enjoying the beautiful day.

Hi Al and Peggy ~ Two together! Too cool! My coworker was just telling us what he spotted over the weekend - a squirrel in a tree munching on a foil covered chocolate easter egg. How funny is that?!

Hi Liz, thanks to the crows for pointing out the hawk.  It is amazing to see smaller birds go after a hawk or a crow, they can be a real pest to the bigger birds and actually be successful in getting them to leave their area.  The pecking order.....  --Gloria
