The Difference Between the Men and the Boys Is the Price of Their Toys!

What a topic you say? Will it even get a reader or a comment? Probably not the point. Just a topic I wanted to share and inspired by a read in the New York Times this morning.

Matchbox die cast collectionA little known fact about me, I collect (or use to...have not purchased one in years) Matchbox die-cast cars. I'm not talking the kinda phony ones of today, but some of the originals ones from the 50's, 60's and 70's. Back when they were die cast, with real tires, interiors and the details, oh my! They don't quite make 'em like that anymore!

Then, this morning, as I was surfing the New York Times Online, I happened into the Auto Section. Of course, the new models at the New York Auto Show had me drooling, but then I found a story on Michael Paul Smith. He collects the much larger type die cast's and does some amazing things with photography. Be sure to take a look at the pictures in the story, and realize those are ALL model cars and sets he created to photograph them. Pretty amazing. I've also got a collection of Lincoln Continental Dealer brochures from the 60's through the 90's. They are packed in a box as they are pretty hard to display in any form that does not take an entire wall of a room!

Just thought I'd share something other that real estate today!

I'll comment. Collections are fun and collections that hold value are even more fun. I had a fewof those die cast models once but ran them through dirt tunnels and over rock piles. Now I have ashelf full of first edition fiction. They are very colorful on the shelf and occasionally I will reread one of them. Thanks for Smith's story. Enjoyed the trip down memory lane.

I'll comment because you have told me about this collection and now I have seen the photo :) Thanks for sharing. Posts like this are part of being authentic.

Thom - Love the old cars. As a child growing up in the 50s I have vivid memories of some of the "classics." Happy Easter!

Too bad you can't find a way to display your collection.  But it sounds like maybe they can be even more special as a collection when you dig them out and see them again (kind like what Glenn posted about taking the books down for another read).

I wonder what ever happened to all those Matchbox cars my brother and I used to have?  We both loved to collect them.  That's quite a display you have!

Glenn: Oh I wish I had some of the ones I destroyed when I use to play with them, till I learned the value of collecting them.

Ken: They are a part of me, but they just sit in that case....I keep thinking I could do something with the $$$?

John:  If I found, and posted the picture of me with a '76 Bill Blass Mark IV, you'd be laughing for days....

Michael: That IS my collection, displayed in the pictures. The brochures would be a nightmare!

Ann: I use to know a guy in my hometown that had a box of the very first ones, ALL in MINT condition, and would not part with them....UGH!

Hi Thom!
I once went to a house to give an EOV in which the owner collected Matchbox cars. They covered 3 entire walls of their family room and they still had many more that couldn't fit! It was crazy!

He did a beautiful job.  I think I have a few more of them on a blog somewhere.  The photography is pretty impressive, too.

I'm trying to start my boys off right with the coolest of Hot Wheels... I didn't 'collect' Matchbox or Hot Wheels as a kid, but I did have a few hundred... and they got used... HARD.  Now the kids are beating up a lot of them.
