Massachusetts taxpayers who live in counties that were declared disaster areas after the recent rainstorms and flooding have been granted a reprieve by the Internal Revenue Service.
Residents in seven Eastern Massachusetts counties, including Middlesex County, have until May 11, 2010 to file 2009 state and federal tax returns according to an article I was delighted to read in yesterday's Boston Globe.
May 11th!! Yowza! In Massachusetts it's not uncommon - depending on how the calendar falls - to get an extra day or two due to the celebration of Patriot's Day - April 19th - when its Monday celebration falls on or near the 15th. But this delay is huge - at least to those of us who owe money when we file.
There's more information at the IRS website and the Massachusetts Department of Revenue website. Send questions your accountant's way - it's not the clearest language I've ever come across - so consult your tax preparer for more information.
