Tax Day Delay For Some Massachusetts Taxpayers

By

gray cat with Uncle Sam hatMassachusetts taxpayers who live in counties that were declared disaster areas after the recent rainstorms and flooding have been granted a reprieve by the Internal Revenue Service.

Residents in seven Eastern Massachusetts counties, including Middlesex County, have until May 11, 2010 to file 2009 state and federal tax returns according to an article I was delighted to read in yesterday's Boston Globe.

May 11th!! Yowza! In Massachusetts it's not uncommon - depending on how the calendar falls - to get an extra day or two due to the celebration of Patriot's Day - April 19th - when its Monday celebration falls on or near the 15th.  But this delay is huge - at least to those of us who owe money when we file.

There's more information at the IRS website and the Massachusetts Department of Revenue website. Send questions your accountant's way - it's not the clearest language I've ever come across - so consult your tax preparer for more information.

That is a great thing to do for those affected by the floods.  Time is needed to get lives back in order and cleaned up!

Hi Leesa ~ It's still quite a mess here for some people.  I can't imagine trying to get your taxes together when things are in such a disarray.

Hi Gloria ~ They do in fact - when I searched for the topic I came across a number of other instances with similar extensions. Don't you love the cat?  I found him/her when I searched on Istockphoto for an Uncle Sam image - couldn't resist.

Liz - wow, I'm impressed. The IRS doing something for folks. Bet that's music to the ears of many Bostonians.
