Earth Day 2010 Green Pledge

Sometimes it's just one small step that can bring about a big difference.

This Earth Day, click here to take the Sierra Club pledge and begin a more sustainable life.

Your Pledge:

Bring reusable bags to the supermarket.
Make a local/organic meal.
Plant a tree.
Bike or walk a trip instead of driving.
Write a letter or email on a green issue I care about.

Check out the map, and see which state is greenest!

The Sierra Club was founded in 1892 - it's almost 110 years old!  John Muir, the "Father of our National Parks", started the Sierra Club, and was extremely significant in the creation of many of our most treasured parks, including Yosemite, Sequoia, Mount Rainier, Petrified Forest, and Grand Canyon National Parks.

Penny, thanks for sharing...at one time I had a small organic farm I ran besides my financial job & it taught me alot about self sustainable & healthy  living.  Right now I'm taking advantage of installing a tankless gas hot water heater that's amazingly green- pricey, yes but with the government 30% credit, Electric company rebate of $300 & the special energy state rebate of $300 I'm getting this hot water heater paid for & installed for 70% off!!  There is alot out there that benefits the consumer- you just need to look & be green.

Penny - Every other day I pick up a plastic bin full of coffee grounds from Java Jive right up the street from my home and compost it for my garden.  When I pick up the bin I leave an empty one so I only make one trip.  Why throw all of these grounds into landfills when they are gold for the garden and other plants?

We also compost everything except meats.  Our trash can rarely gets full.  Amazing what people throw out that they could throw in a compost bin and recycle! The garbage disposal was the worst invention in American homes.

Compostable things include:  egg shells, fruit scraps, vegetable scraps, paper grocery bags, coffee grounds, coffee filters, tea bags, cardboard egg boxes, grass clippings, leaves, pine needles, uneaten oatmeal, rice, potatoes, chips, noodles, spolied vegetables (you know the ones in the bottom drawer of the fridge that you accidentally forgot about). If it's veggie, fruit, grain or pasta it can go into a compost bin.

If you don't have a compost bin you can put these small scraps in a blender and blend with water.  Throw the blended matter into a garden or flower bed and work into the soil.  It will attract earthworms who eat the organic matter and leave worm casings which plants love.  If you are worried about smell then throw it in a flower bed far from any doors.
