For quite some time there has been companies marketing that you can get a free credit report. But that report is not always free. Many of these companies then offer other services once you applied for their free credit report. Services such as credit monitoring, credit repair, etc. Worse is that you may have to put in your credit card info to get the report, leading to you getting billed for other services. With the new CARD Act of 2009, companies must now put "THIS NOTICE IS REQUIRED BY LAW. Read more at FTC.GOV. You have the right to a free credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com or 877-322-8228, the ONLY authorized source under federal law." This message will appear on top of any page advertising a free credit report. Please remember you are entitled to a free credit and please go to FTC.GOV for more info. Credit Monitoring is a great idea, but just read the small print carefully and do your research.

An awful lot of people still get fooled by these "free" credit report ads.
