It's yard work time in Minnesota.

It is the time of year to get the lawn in shape.  We are running 2-3 weeks early, so some precautions need to be heeded...

1) Fertilizer can be applied right now, BUT, Make sure that rain will fall within a day or two.  Fertilizer can and does burn the grass when just sitting on top of it and will cause the lawn to look patchy for some time.

2) Preparing garden beds for flowers and produce.  Working the ground now is great.  Till in the fertilizer well and allow it to start to enrich the soil.  Planting should still be held back on all but the most hardiest plants.  ALTHOUGH, I do plant some things early.  The worst that can happen is that a frost kills the young plant and I have to re-plant.  I am no further behind.  If that frost does not come..I am way ahead of the game.

3) There is a burning ban on.  Check your local area.  A fire that gets away can be costly in property damage, fines and loss of lives.

4) If you feel it is still a bit early to trek out on the lawn, now is a good time to get the mowers and tillers in shape along with any other garden and lawn tools needed.

Be por-active now with the yard work and enjoy more of the summer.

Hey Bill, this is a great list to get started for Spring! We say not to plant tomatoes until the snow is off the Owyhee Mountains... Usually Mothers Day. Happy Spring!

Good tips Bill. With our early spring, I've been hard at it now for weeks. I actually had to mow in Feb. Got the fertilizer in on time, still lots to do. Best to you.

I get things planted real early.  I have a smaller garden and I have a cover big enough to cover it incase of bad weather.

I can't believe how quickly everything is growing once again.  It seems as though Spring is already over and Summer is quickly taking hold.  I'll be cutting the grass this weekend for sure.

Bill, it is time to get things shaped up.  And for people like me, it gives me more time to enjoy the summer.

I have been hard at work on my yard and getting flowers in the ground for about a week now.  It's starting to shape up nicely.

How is yard work different in MN than in CA?  Maybe 'cause it snows in MN, right!
