Buying a home in Merrick Woods, on Long Island's south shore  is more about lifestyle than simply bricks and mortar.  People fall in love with the tree lined streets, the pristine properties and the eclectic home choices.  They feel blessed to be in an area where children happily ride their bikes, play street hockey and know their neighbors.  When Halloween rolls around, you'll find adorably dressed monsters and superheros walking side by side, in prodigious numbers, with their parents strolling along two steps behind.  It feels like community.  It feels like home.

Just a few short years ago, getting into Merrick Woods for first time buyers was often little more than a dream.  They waited for any opportunity to buy a starter home or a fixer upper just to get a foot in the proverbial door of this charming bedroom community.  Then, when the crazy real estate market began its downturn, there was a glimmer of hope.  Fast forward to today and buyers, once unable to call the woods home, are flocking to the area.

Close to the Long Island Railroad with its short 41 scheduled minutes into Manhattan, Merrick is an oft chosen destination for commuters.  The town of Merrick is a very short distance from the famed Jones Beach, great shopping, golf courses and a criss cross of major highways leading to anywhere else on Long Island, Queens or New York City.

Styles of homes in Merrick Woods are many and varied, from the mid century cape cods, to "ranger ranches," colonials, tudors and contemporaries.  Just itching for new construction?  Every once in awhile you can get lucky and find a very special new home.  Right at this moment there is a beautiful, custom colonial that just might fill the bill.

Merrick Woods children attend three different school districts, depending on where the property is.  Servicing the eastern part of the woods is school district 4 (Bellmore Schools: Park Avenue Elementary, Grand Avenue Middle School and Mepham High School).  The other two districts are 29 (North Merrick: Camp Avenue Elementary, Merrick Avenue Middle School and Calhoun High School), and 25 (Merrick: Chatterton Elementary, Merrick Avenue Middle School and Calhoun High School).  People often choose this area for its excellent schools.

Geri, this is a compelling piece on Merrick Woods in Long Island, New York. It sounds like the same sort of community feel that we have here in the community where we live.
